“grandmother.” The Hebrew text is “mother,” but “father” and “mother” were also used for grandparents and ancestors. We replaced “mother” with “grandmother” in this verse for clarity. Normally verses such as this tell us the name of the actual mother of the king (cp. 1 Kings 15:2; 22:41; 2 Kings 8:26; 12:1; 14:2; 15:2, 33; 18:2, etc.). The fact that this verse gives us the name of the grandmother shows the tremendous influence she held in the kingdom. But she was an idol worshipper and Asa removed her from her royal position (1 Kings 15:13).

“queen-mother.” The Hebrew word translated “queen-mother” is gebereth (#01404 גְּבֶרֶת), and in this context the “queen-mother” is the mother of the king (BDAG Hebrew-English lexicon). The Queen-mother was the most powerful woman in the kingdom, much more powerful than any of the wives of the king, who often did not have much real power at all.
