By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down and wept when we remembered Zion.
On the willow trees in its midst we hung up our lyres.
For there our captors demanded songs from us, and our tormenters demanded joy: “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”
How can we sing Yahweh’s song in a foreign land?
If I forget you, O Jerusalem, may my right hand forget.
May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not elevate Jerusalem above my highest joy.
Remember, O Yahweh, against the Edomites the day of Jerusalem. They said, “Raze it, raze it to its very foundation!”
O daughter Babylon, you who are condemned to destruction, blessed is he who repays you the recompense with what you have dealt to us.
Blessed will be he who seizes and dashes your little children against the rock.
