1 By the rivers of Babylon,
there we sat down and wept
when we remembered Zion.
2 On the willow trees in its midst
we hung up our lyres.
3 For there our captors demanded songs from us,
and our tormenters demanded joy:
“Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”
4 How can we sing Yahweh’s song
in a foreign land?
5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
may my right hand forget.
6 May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth
if I do not remember you,
if I do not elevate Jerusalem above my highest joy.
7 Remember, O Yahweh, against the Edomites the day of Jerusalem.
They said, “Raze it, raze it to its very foundation!”
8 O daughter of Babylon, you who are condemned to destruction,
blessed is he who repays you the recompense
with what you have dealt to us.
9 Blessed will be he who seizes
and dashes your little children against the rock.
