BOOK I

 1 Blessed is the person

who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,

nor stands on the road of sinners,

nor sits in the seat of scoffers.

2 But his delight is in Yahweh’s Torah.

On his Torah he meditates day and night.

3 He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water

that brings forth its fruit in its season,

whose leaf also does not wither.

And in whatever he does, he prospers.

4
It is not so with the wicked,

because they are like the chaff

 that the wind drives away.

5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,

nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

6
For Yahweh knows the road of the righteous,

but the road of the wicked will perish.

1 Why do the nations rage and the peoples

 plot a vain thing?

2 The kings of the earth take a stand,

and the rulers take counsel together

against Yahweh and against his Anointed,a saying,

3 “Let’s break their restraints apart

and cast their cords from us.”

4
He who sits in the heavens laughs.

 The Lord mocks them.

5 Then he will speak to them in his anger,

and terrify them in his wrath, saying,

6 “I have installed my king

 on Zion, my holy mountain.”

7
I will proclaim the decree of Yahweh.

 He said to me, “You are my son;

today I have become your father.

 8 Ask of me,

and I will give the nations as your inheritance,

and the uttermost parts of the earth for your possession.

9 You will break them with a rod of iron.

You will dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”

10
So now, be wise, O kings;

Accept correction, O judges of the earth.

 11 Serve Yahweh with fear,

 and rejoice with trembling.

12 Kiss the Son lest he be angry

and you perish on the road,

for his wrath will soon be kindled.

Blessed are all those who take refuge in him.

A Psalm of David,
when he fled from Absalom, his son.

1 O Yahweh, how my adversaries are many!

Many are those who rise up against me.

2 Many there are who say of my soul,

“There is no deliverance for him in God.” Selah.

3
But you, Yahweh, are a shield around me,

my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.

4 I cry out to Yahweh with my voice,

and he answers me from his holy mountain. Selah.

5
I laid down and slept.

I awoke, because Yahweh sustains me.

6 I will not be afraid of the multitudes of people

who have set themselves against me on every side.

7
Arise, O Yahweh!

 Save me, O my God!

Oh that you might strike all of my enemies on the cheek.

Oh that you might shatter the teeth of the wicked.

8 The victory belongs to Yahweh.

May your blessing be on your people. Selah.

 O God of my righteousness.

Give me relief in my distress.

Be gracious to me and hear my prayer.

2
O children of high-born men, how long will my reputation be turned into shame?

How long will you love vanity? How long will you seek after falsehood? Selah.

 3 But know that Yahweh has set apart the godly person for himself;

Yahweh will hear when I call to him.

4 You can be angry, but do not sin.

Speak in your heart on your bed,

 and keep silent. Selah.

5 Sacrifice the sacrifices of righteousness,

 and trust in Yahweh.

6
Many are saying, “Who will show us good?”

O Yahweh, lift up upon us the light of your face.

7
You have placed joy in my heart;

more joy than the season when their grain and new wine abound.

8 In peace I will both lie down and sleep,

 make me live in safety.

For the Musical Director,

A Psalm of David.

1 Give ear to my words, O Yahweh.

 Consider my sighing.

2 Pay attention to the sound of my cry

 my King and my God,

for it is to you that I pray.

3
O Yahweh, in the morning you will hear my voice.

In the morning I will make preparations for you

 and will carefully watch.

4
For you are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness.

 Evil cannot sojourn with you.

5 The ones who boast cannot stand

 before your eyes.

You hate all workers of wickedness.

6 You will destroy those who speak falsehood.

The man of blood-guilt and deceit Yahweh abhors.

7
But as for me, through the abundance of your covenant loyalty

I will enter into your house.

I will bow toward your holy temple in reverence of you.

8 Lead me, O Yahweh, in your righteousness

 because of my enemies.

Make your road straight before my face.

9
For there is nothing trustworthy in their mouth.

 Their inward part is destruction.

Their throat is an open grave.

 They flatter with their tongue.

10 Declare them guilty, O God.

Let them fall by their own plans.

Drive them away because of the multitude of their transgressions,

 for they have disobeyed you.

11
But let all those who seek refuge in you rejoice;

let them continually shout for joy.

And spread your protection over them

so that those who love your name may exalt in you.

12 For it is you who blesses the righteous person.

O Yahweh, you will surround him with favor like a large shield.

1 O Yahweh, do not reprove me in your anger,

nor correct me in your wrath.

2 Show favor unto me, O Yahweh, for I am frail.

Heal me, O Yahweh, for my bones are troubled.

3 My soul is also very troubled.

 But you, O Yahweh–how long?

4
Return, O Yahweh. Deliver my soul

and save me on account of your covenant faithfulness.

5 For in death there is no mention of you.

In Sheol, who can give you praise?

6
I am weary with my groaning.

I flood my couch with my tears.

7 My eye wastes away because of grief.

It grows old because of all those who act hostile to me.

8
Depart from me, all you workers of wickedness,

9 Yahweh has heard my supplication.

A lament of David,
which he sang to Yahweh,
concerning the words of Cush the Benjamite.

1 O Yahweh my God, I take refuge in you.

Save me from all those who pursue me, and deliver me,

2 lest he tears apart my soul like a lion,

tearing me apart while there is none to deliver.

3
O Yahweh, my God, if I have done this,

if there is injustice in my hands,

4 if I have done evil to him who was at peace with me

or if I have plundered my adversary without cause,

 5 let the enemy pursue my soul and let him overtake it;

and let him tread my life down to the earth

and lay my glory in the dust. Selah.

6
Arise, O Yahweh, in your anger.

Lift up yourself against the fury of my adversaries.

 Indeed, arouse yourself, my God.

 You have commanded judgment.

7 Let the assembly of the peoples surround you.

 Sit over them on high.

 8 Yahweh judges the peoples.

 Vindicate me, O Yahweh,

according to my righteousness, and according to my integrity, O Most High.

9
Now let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end,

 but establish the righteous person;

indeed, the one who tests the hearts and kidneys

 is a righteous God.

10 My shield is borne by God

who delivers the upright in heart.

 11 God judges righteously,

but, he is a God who has indignation every day.

12
If a person does not repent,

 God will sharpen his sword;

he has bent his bow and prepared it.

13 He has also prepared for himself the instruments of death.

He makes ready his flaming arrows.

14
Behold, the unrepentant person is pregnant with iniquity.

Yes, he has conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.

15 He digs a hole and hollows it out,

but he falls into the pit that he made.

16 His trouble will return to his own head.

Indeed, his violence will come down on the crown of his own head.

17
I will praise Yahweh according to his righteousness,

and will sing praise to the name of Yahweh Most High.

on an instrument of Gath.
A Psalm of David.

 1 O Yahweh, our Lord,

how majestic is your name in all the earth.

You have set your glory above the heavens!

2 From the mouths of babes and infants

 you have established strength

 because of your adversaries,

to silence the enemy and the avenger.

3
When I look at your heavens,

 the work of your fingers,

 the moon and the stars

 that you have established,

4 what is man, that you think of him,

and the son of man, that you visit him?

5 For you have made him a little lower than God,

and crowned him with glory and honor.

6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands.

You put all things under his feet:

7 all of the sheep and cattle,

and even the animals of the field,

8 the birds of the heavens,

 the fish of the sea

and whatever passes through the paths of the seas.

9
O Yahweh, our Lord,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!

For the Musical Director
Set to “Muth Labben.”
A Psalm of David.

1 I will give thanks to Yahweh with my whole heart.

I will recount of all your marvelous works.

2 I will rejoice and exult in you.

I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

3
When my enemies turn back,

they will stumble and perish in your presence.

4 For you have brought about my justice and my just cause.

You sit on the throne judging with righteousness.

5 You have rebuked the nations.

 You have destroyed the wicked.

You have blotted out their name forever and ever.

6 The enemy has come to an end in perpetual desolations.

 And cities you have uprooted,

the very memory of them has perished.

7
But Yahweh will sit as king forever.

He has established his throne for the judgment.

 8 He will judge the world with righteousness;

with uprightness He will administer judgment to the peoples.

9 Yahweh will also be a high tower for the oppressed person,

a high tower in times of trouble.

10 Those who know your name will trust in you,

for you, O Yahweh, have not forsaken

 those who seek you.

11
Sing praises to Yahweh who dwells in Zion,

declare among the people what he has done.

12 For he who avenges blood remembers them,

he does not forget the cry of the afflicted.

13
Have mercy on me, O Yahweh.

Look upon my affliction caused by those who hate me,

O God who lifts me up from the gates of death,

14 so that I may recount all your songs of praise.

In the gates of the daughter of Zion,

I will rejoice in your deliverance.

15
The nations have sunk down in the pit that they made.

Their foot has been caught in the net that they hid.

16 Yahweh has made himself known.

 He has executed judgment.

With the deeds of his hands

he strikes down the wicked person. Meditation. Selah.

17
The wicked will return to Sheol;

even all the nations that forgot God.

18 For the needy will not always be forgotten,

nor will the hope of the afflicted perish forever.

19
Arise, O Yahweh! Do not let mankind prevail.

Let the nations be judged in your presence.

20 Put them in terror, O Yahweh.

Let the nations know that they are only human. Selah.

1 Why do you stand at a distance, O Yahweh?

Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

2 In arrogance, a wicked person hunts down an afflicted.

They will be caught in the schemes that they devised.

3
For the wicked person boasts of his soul’s cravings.

He blesses the greedy and curses Yahweh.

4 The wicked person, in the pride of his face,

does not seek God. “There is no God” is in all his thoughts.

5 His roads are firm at all times.

He is haughty, and your judgments are far from him.

As for all his adversaries, he snorts at them.

6 He says in his heart, “I will not be shaken.

For generations I will have no trouble.”

7 His mouth is full of cursing, deceit, and oppression.

Under his tongue is trouble and wickedness.

8 He lies in ambush near the villages.

In the secret places he murders the innocent person.

His eyes lie in wait for the helpless.

9 He lies in wait in the secret place like a lion in its thicket.

He lies in wait to seize the afflicted person.

He seizes the afflicted person by drawing him into his net.

10 So the crushed one sinks down,

and the unfortunate ones fall under his might.

11 He says in his heart, “God has forgotten.

He hides his face. He never saw it.”

12
Arise, O Yahweh! O God, lift up your hand!

 Do not forget the afflicted.

13 Why does the wicked person spurn God

and say in his heart, “You will not hold me accountable”?

14 On the contrary, you yourself see trouble and vexation.

You look at it to take it into your hand.

The afflicted person frees himself because of you.

You become a helper of the orphan.

15 Break the strength of the wicked person.

And as for the evil person, you will call his wickedness to account

 until you find none.

16
Yahweh is King forever and ever!

The nations will perish from his land.

17 O Yahweh, you have listened to the desire of the afflicted.

 You will prepare their heart.

You will cause your ear to attentively listen

18 in order to judge the orphan and the oppressed person

so that the man of the earth will terrorize them no longer.

1 In Yahweh I have sought refuge.

How can you say to my soul,

“Flee like a bird to your mountain,”

2 for, behold, the wicked bend their bows.

They set their arrows on the strings

to shoot in the darkness at the upright in heart.

3 When the foundations are destroyed,

what can a righteous person do?

4
Yahweh is in his holy temple.

Yahweh’s throne is in the heavens.

His eyes observe. His eyelids put people to the test.

5 Yahweh puts the righteous person to the test, but his soul hates the wicked person

and the one who loves violence.

 6 He will rain down coals upon the wicked;

fire and sulfur and scorching wind will be the portion of their cup.

7 For Yahweh is righteous. He loves righteousness.

The upright person will see his face.

upon an eight-stringed lyre.
A Psalm of David.

1 Help, O Yahweh, for the godly person has come to an end.

For the faithful have vanished from among mankind.

2 They speak deceit, each person to his neighbor.

They speak with flattering lips and with a double heart.

3 O Yahweh, cut off all the flattering lips

and the tongue that speaks boastful things,

4 who have said, “With our tongue we will prevail.

Our lips are our own. Who is our master?”

5
“Because of the devastation of the afflicted,

and because of the groaning of the needy,

 I will now arise,” says Yahweh;

“I will set him in safety from those who malign him.”

6
The words of Yahweh are pure words,

like silver refined in a clay furnace,

 purified seven times.

7
You, O Yahweh, will cover them.

You will guard them from this generation forever.

8 The wicked strut about, back and forth,

as what is vile among mankind is exalted.

1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”

They are corrupt. They have committed an abominable work.

There is no one who does good.

2 Yahweh looked down from the heavens upon mankind,

to see if there were any who understood,

 who were seeking God.

3 They have all turned aside.

 They have together become corrupt.

There is none who does good,

 not even one.

4
Do any of the workers of wickedness understand?

They devour my people as they devour bread,

and they do not call on Yahweh.

5
There they are, in great dread,

for God is with the generation of the righteous.

6 You evildoers frustrate the plan of the afflicted person

 but Yahweh is his refuge.

7
Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion!

When Yahweh restores his captive people,

Jacob will rejoice, and Israel will be glad.

A Psalm of David.

1 O Yahweh, who can sojourn in your tent?

Who can live on your holy mountain?

2
He who walks blamelessly, and performs righteousness,

 and speaks truth in his heart;

3 He who does not slander with his tongue,

nor does evil to his friend,

 nor takes up a reproach against his neighbor;

4 In his eyes a vile person is despised,

 but who honors those who have the fear of Yahweh;

 he who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and does not change his mind;

5 he who does not lend his money with interest,

nor takes a bribe against the innocent.

He who does these things will never be shaken.

An inscribed poem of David.

1 Keep watch over me, O God, for I take refuge in you.

2
I say to Yahweh, “You are my Lord.

My welfare surely rests upon you.”

3 You have said to the holy ones who are in the land:

 “they are also majestic;

all of my delight is in them.”

4 Those who have acquired another god,

 their pains will be multiplied.

I will not offer their drink offerings of blood,

nor will I pronounce their names on my lips.

5
Yahweh is my assigned portion

 and my cup.

 You support my lot.

6 The lines have fallen to me

 in pleasant places.

Yes, I have a beautiful inheritance.

7
I will bless Yahweh who has given me counsel.

Yes, my kidneys instruct me in the night seasons.

 8 I have always kept Yahweh in my sight;

because he is at my right hand,

 I will not be shaken.

9
Therefore my heart is glad

 and my glory rejoices.

Yes, my body will also dwell in safety.

10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,

nor will you allow your faithful one to see the pit.

11 You will make known to me the path of life.

In your presence is fullness of joy.

In your right hand there are pleasures forevermore.

A Prayer of David.

 1 Hear, O Yahweh, my righteous plea;

Give attention to my lamenting cry.

 Heed my prayer

that is not from deceitful lips.

2 Let my vindication come forth from your presence.

Let your eyes see upright things.

3 You have tested my heart.

You have visited me in the night.

You have tested me and not found anything.

I have resolved that my mouth will not disobey.

4 As for the works of people,

by the word of your lips

 I have guarded myself

from the paths of the violent person.

5 My steps have held fast to your paths.

 My feet were not shaken.

6
I have called on you,

because you will answer me, O God.

Incline your ear to me. Hear my plea.

7 Reveal the wonder of your covenant faithfulness,

O Savior of those who take refuge

 at your right hand

from those who rise up against them.

8 Guard me as the apple of your eye.

Hide me under the shadow of your wings,

9 from the presence of the wicked who oppress me,

my mortal enemies who surround me.

10
They have closed their own fat heart.

 Their mouth speaks arrogantly.

11 They have now surrounded me in my steps.

 They set their eyes

to cast me down to the earth.

12 His likeness is that of a lion longing to tear its prey,

yes, like a young lion crouching in hiding places.

13
Arise, O Yahweh,

confront his face. Bring him down low.

Deliver my soul from the wicked person by your sword,

14 from men by your hand, O Yahweh,

 from men of the world

whose portion is among the living.

But your treasured people, you have filled their belly.

 Your children are satisfied,

and they store up their excess for their children.

15
“I, with righteousness, will see your face.

I will be satisfied with seeing your form when I awake.”

For the Musical Director.
Of David, the servant of Yahweh,
who spoke to Yahweh the words of this song in the day that Yahweh delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. And he said...

1 “I love you, O Yahweh, my strength.”

 2 Yahweh is my high ridge, my fortress, and my deliverer;

 my God, my rock, in whom I seek refuge;

my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower.

3 I call on Yahweh, who is worthy to be praised,

and I am saved from my enemies.

4
The cords of death surrounded me.

The torrents of Belial have terrified me.

5 The cords of Sheol were around me.

The snares of death confronted me.

6 In my distress, I called on Yahweh,

and I cried for help to my God.

He heard my voice out of his temple,

And my cry to him came into his ears.

7
Then the earth shook and trembled.

The foundations also of the mountains quaked

and they shook back and forth because he was angry.

8 Smoke went out of his nostrils

and fire from his mouth devoured.

Coals were set aflame by it.

9 Then he spread apart the heavens and came down.

And a thick cloud was under his feet.

10 He rode on a cherub and flew.

Yes, he glided swiftly on the wings of the wind.

11 He made darkness his hiding place,

his lair around him, darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.

12 Out of the brightness before him his thick clouds passed by,

with hail and coals of fire.

13 Yahweh also thundered in the heavens.

And the Most High gave forth his voice: hail and coals of fire.

 14 He sent out his arrows and scattered them;

And he multiplied lightning bolts and confused them.

15 Then the channels of water appeared.

The foundations of the world were uncovered

 at your rebuke, O Yahweh,

at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.

16
He sent from on high.

 He took me;

He drew me out of many waters.

17 He delivered me from my strong enemy,

 from those who hate me,

for they were too mighty for me.

18 They confronted me in the day of my calamity,

 but Yahweh was my support.

19 He brought me forth also into the open space.

He delivered me because he delighted in me.

20
Yahweh has rewarded me

 according to my righteousness.

According to the purity of my hands

 has he recompensed me.

21 For I have kept the roads of Yahweh

and have not wickedly departed from my God.

22 For all his laws were before me.

I did not put away his statutes from me.

23 I was also blameless with him.

I kept myself from my iniquity.

24 So Yahweh has rewarded me

 according to my righteousness,

according to the purity of my hands in his eyesight.

25
With the faithful

 you will show yourself faithful.

 With the blameless man

 you will show yourself blameless.

 26 With the pure

 you will show yourself pure.

 With the crooked

 you will show yourself cunning.

27 For you will deliver an afflicted people,

but the haughty eyes you will humiliate.

28 For you will light my lamp, O Yahweh.

My God will illuminate my darkness.

29 For by you, I advance through a troop.

By my God, I leap over a wall.

30
As for God, his road is blameless.

The speech of Yahweh has been tested.

He is a shield to all those who seek refuge in him.

31 For who is God, except Yahweh?

Who is a rock besides our God,

32 the God who wraps my waist with strength

 and makes my road blameless?

33 He makes my feet like the does’ feet

and sets me on my high places.

34 He teaches my hands for the battle,

so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.

35 You have also given me the shield of your deliverance.

And your right hand supports me.

And your humility has made me great.

 36 You have enlarged my steps under me;

And my ankles have not slipped.

37
I will pursue my enemies and overtake them.

And I will not return until they are consumed.

38 I will smash them through so that they will not be able to stand.

They will fall under my feet.

39 For you have wrapped my waist with strength for the battle.

You cause those who rise up to bow down underneath me.

40 You have also given to me the neck of my enemies

that I might annihilate those who hate me.

 41 They cried for help, but there was no one to save;

they cried to Yahweh, but he did not answer them.

42 Then I crushed them like dust before the wind.

I crushed them like the mud of the streets.

43
You have delivered me from the disputes of the people.

You have made me the head of the nations.

A people whom I have not known will serve me.

44 As soon as the report hits the ear, they will become obedient to me.

Children of foreigners will cringe before me.

45 Children of foreigners will wither away

and will come trembling out of their dens.

46
Yahweh lives, and blessed be my rock.

And let the God of my deliverance be exalted—

47 the God who executes vengeance for me

 and subdues peoples under me.

48 He delivers me from my enemies.

Yes, you lift me up above those who rise up against me.

You deliver me from the violent person.

49 Therefore I will praise you among the nations, O Yahweh,

and will make music to your name.

50 He gives great deliverance to his king

and shows covenant faithfulness to his anointed one,

to David and to his seed forevermore.

A Psalm of David.

1 The heavens declare the glory of God.

The expanse shows the works of his hands.

2 Day after day they pour forth speech,

and night after night they declare knowledge.

3 There is no speech and there are no words–

 their voice is not heard.

4 Yet their measuring line has gone out through all the earth,

their words to the end of the world.

In them he has set a tent for the sun,

5
which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,

like a strong man rejoicing to run his course.

6 His coming out is from the end of the heavens,

 and his circuit is to their other end;

there is nothing hidden from its heat.

7
Yahweh’s law is perfect,

 restoring the soul.

 Yahweh’s testimony is sure,

 making wise the simple.

 8 Yahweh’s precepts are right,

 rejoicing the heart.

 Yahweh’s commandment is pure,

 enlightening the eyes.

9 The fear of Yahweh is clean,

 enduring forever.

 Yahweh’s judgments are true,

 and righteous altogether.

10 More to be desired are they than gold,

 yes, than much fine gold;

 sweeter also than honey

and the drippings of the honeycomb.

11 Moreover by them is your servant warned.

In keeping them there is great reward.

12
Who can discern his own errors?

 Forgive me from hidden errors.

13 Keep back your servant also from arrogant ones.

Let them not have dominion over me.

 Then I will be upright.

I will be blameless and innocent of great transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth

and the meditation of my heart

 be acceptable in your eyes,

O Yahweh, my rock and my redeemer.

6 For you grant him blessings forever.

You make him glad with joy by your presence.

7 For the king trusts in Yahweh.

And by the covenant faithfulness of the Most High,

 he will not be shaken.

8
Your hand will find out all of your enemies.

Your right hand will find out those who hate you.

9 You will make them like a fiery furnace

at the time of your presence.

Yahweh will swallow them up in his anger.

 The fire will devour them.

10 You will destroy their offspring from the earth,

and their seed from among the children of men.

11 For they intended evil against you.

They plotted wicked devices against you that will not succeed.

12 For you will make them turn their shoulder

when you aim drawn bows at their faces.

13
Be exalted, O Yahweh, in your strength,

we will sing and make music about your might

For the Musical Director;
set to “The Doe of the Morning.”
A Psalm of David.

1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Why are you far from my deliverance

and from the words of my groaning?

 2 My God, I cry out in the daytime, but you do not answer;

and at night, but I find no rest.

 3 But you are holy,

sitting enthroned upon the praises of Israel.

4 Our fathers trusted in you.

They trusted, and you delivered them.

5 They cried out to you and were delivered.

They trusted in you and were not disappointed.

6
But I am a worm, and no man;

a reproach of mankind, and despised by people.

7 All those who see me mock me.

They insult me with their lips. They shake their heads, saying,

 8 “He trusts in Yahweh;

 let him deliver him.

 Let him rescue him,

 since he delights in him.”

9
But you brought me out of the womb.

You made me trust even at my mother’s breasts.

10 I was thrown on you from my mother’s womb.

You have been my God from my mother’s belly.

11 Do not be far from me, for trouble is near.

For there is no one to help.

12
Many bulls have surrounded me.

Mighty bulls of Bashan have encircled me.

13 They open their mouths wide against me,

like a lion tearing prey and roaring.

14 I am poured out like water.

 All my bones are dislocated.

 My heart is like wax;

 it is melted within me.

15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd.

And my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth.

And you lay me in the dust of death.

16 For dogs have surrounded me.

A company of evildoers have enclosed me.

They have pierced my hands and feet.

17 I can count out all of my bones.

They look and stare at me.

18 They divide my garments among them.

They cast lots for my clothing.

19
But you, O Yahweh, do not be distant!

O my Strength; hurry to help me.

20 Deliver my soul from the sword,

my only life from the power of the dog.

21 Deliver me from the lion’s mouth!

Yes, from the horns of the wild oxen,

 you have answered me.

22
I will declare your name to my brothers.

In the midst of the assembly, I will praise you.

23 You who fear Yahweh, praise him!

All you descendants of Jacob, glorify him!

Tremble before him, all you descendants of Israel!

24 For he has neither despised nor ignored

the affliction of the afflicted person,

 nor has he hidden his face from him;

but when he cried out to him, he heard.

25
From you comes my praise in the great assembly.

I will fulfil my vows before those who fear him.

26 The afflicted will eat and be satisfied.

Those who seek Yahweh will praise him.

 May your hearts live forever.

27
All the ends of the earth will remember

 and turn to Yahweh.

All the families of the nations

 will worship in your presence.

28 For the kingship is Yahweh’s.

And he rules over the nations.

29 All the prosperous of the earth will eat and worship.

All those who go down to the dust

will bow down before his face,

even he who cannot keep his soul alive.

 30 Offspring will serve him.

The next generation will be told about the Lord.

31 They will come and will declare his righteousness

to a people that will be born,

 for he has done it.

 1 Yahweh is my shepherd,

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures.

He leads me beside still waters.

 3 He restores my soul.

He guides me in the paths of righteousness

 for his name’s sake.

4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

 I will fear no evil,

 for you are with me.

Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5
You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies.

You anoint my head with oil.

 My cup runs over.

6 Surely goodness and covenant faithfulness will pursue me

all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in Yahweh’s house

 for my length of days.

2 For he has founded it on the seas

3
Who may ascend to the mountain of Yahweh?

And who may stand in his holy place?

4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,

who has not lifted up his soul to what is false

 and has not sworn deceitfully.

5 He will receive a blessing from Yahweh,

even righteousness from the God of his salvation.

6 This is the generation of those who seek Him,

7
Lift up your heads, O gates!

Yes, be lifted up, O everlasting doors,

and the King of glory will enter.

8 Who is this King of glory?

 Yahweh, strong and mighty,

 Yahweh, mighty in battle.

 9 Lift up your heads, O gates;

yes, lift them up, O everlasting doors,

and the King of glory will enter.

Of David.

1 To you, O Yahweh, I lift up my soul.

2 O my God, I have trusted in you.

Do not let me be ashamed.

Do not let my enemies exult over me.

3 Indeed, all of those who wait for you

 will not be ashamed

 Those acting unfaithfully without reason

 will be ashamed.

4
Declare to me your ways, O Yahweh!

 Teach me your paths!

5 Lead me in your truth and teach me,

 for you are the God of my salvation;

I wait for you all day long.

6 O Yahweh, remember your tender mercies

 and your covenant faithfulness,

for they are from ancient times.

7 Do not remember the sins of my youth,

 nor my transgressions.

Remember me according to your covenant faithfulness,

for your goodness’ sake, O Yahweh.

8
Yahweh is good and upright,

therefore he will teach sinners in the way.

9 He will lead the afflicted in justice.

Indeed, he will teach the afflicted his road.

10 All the paths of Yahweh are covenant faithfulness and truth,

For those who are keeping his covenant and his laws.

 11 For your name’s sake, O Yahweh,

you forgave my iniquity, for it is great.

12
What is the person who fears Yahweh?

He will teach him in the way that he should choose.

13 His soul will spend the night in wellbeing.

And his seed will inherit the land.

14 The counsel of Yahweh is for those who fear him.

He will show them his covenant.

15 My eyes are continually on Yahweh,

for he will remove my feet out of the net.

16
Turn to me and show me favor,

for I am all alone and afflicted.

17 The troubles of my heart have been enlarged.

Oh bring me out of my distresses.

18 Look upon my affliction and my trouble,

and take away all my sins.

19 Look upon my enemies, for they are many.

They hate me with violent hatred.

20 Keep watch over my soul and deliver me.

Do not let me be ashamed,

for I have sought refuge in you.

 21 May integrity and uprightness

 guard me,

for I have waited for you.

22

Of David.

1 Yahweh is my light and my salvation.

 Whom should I fear?

Yahweh is the stronghold of my life.

 Whom should I dread?

2 When evildoers approached me to devour my flesh,

my adversaries and my foes, they stumbled and fell.

3 Though an army should encamp against me,

 my heart will not fear.

Though war should rise against me,

even then I will be trusting.

4
One thing I have asked of Yahweh,

 that I will seek:

to dwell in the house of Yahweh

all the days of my life,

 to see Yahweh’s beauty

and to inquire in his temple.

5 For in the day of trouble

he will hide me in his place of refuge,

he will hide me under the cover of his tent.

He will raise me upon a rock.

6 So now my head will be lifted up above

 my enemies around me.

I will offer sacrifices in his tent with a joyful shout.

I will sing, yes, I will make music to Yahweh.

7
Hear, O Yahweh, my voice when I call.

Show me favor, and answer me.

8 When you said, “Seek my face,”

 my heart said to you,

“I will seek your face, O Yahweh.”

9 Do not hide your face from me.

Do not turn your servant away in anger.

 You have been my help.

Do not forsake me, nor leave me,

 O God of my salvation.

10 For if my father and my mother forsake me,

 then Yahweh will receive me.

11
Teach me your road, O Yahweh.

Yes, lead me in the level path

 because of my enemies.

12 Do not deliver me over to the desire of my adversaries,

for false witnesses have risen up against me

and they violently witness against me.

13
Surely I still believe:

I will see the goodness of Yahweh

in the land of the living.

 14 Wait for Yahweh.

Be strong and let your heart take courage.

 Yes, wait for Yahweh.

Of David.

 1 To you, O Yahweh, I call.

 My rock, do not be deaf to me;

lest, if you are silent to me,

I would become like those who go down into the pit.

2 Hear the voice of my petitions

when I cry out to you for help,

when I lift up my hands

 toward your most holy place.

3
Do not draw me away with the wicked,

Even with the workers of wickedness

who speak peace with their neighbors

when evil is in their hearts.

4 Give to them according to their work

and according to the wickedness of their deeds.

Give to them according to the work of their hands.

 Repay them what they deserve.

5 Because they do not understand

 the works of Yahweh,

nor the deeds of his hands,

he will break them down and not build them up.

6
Blessed be Yahweh,

because he has heard the voice of my petitions.

7 Yahweh is my strength and my shield.

My heart has trusted in him, and I am helped.

 Therefore my heart rejoices.

I will praise him with my song.

8
Yahweh is the strength of his people.

Yes, he is a stronghold of salvation to his anointed one.

9 Deliver your people and bless your inheritance.

Be their shepherd also, and carry them forever.

A Psalm of David.

1 Render to Yahweh, you sons of God,

render to Yahweh glory and strength.

2 Render to Yahweh the glory due to his name.

 Worship Yahweh in holy attire.

3
Yahweh’s voice is on the waters.

 The God of glory thunders,

 Yahweh is on many waters.

 4 Yahweh’s voice is powerful.

Yahweh’s voice is full of majesty.

5 The voice of Yahweh breaks the cedars.

Yes, Yahweh breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.

 6 Yes, he makes Lebanon skip like a calf;

and Sirion skip like a young wild ox.

7 Yahweh’s voice strikes with flames of fire.

8 Yahweh’s voice causes the wilderness to tremble.

Yahweh causes the wilderness of Kadesh to tremble.

9 Yahweh’s voice makes the trees writhe,

 and strips the forests bare.

But in his temple everything says, “Glory!”

10
Yahweh sat enthroned at the flood.

Yes, Yahweh is sitting enthroned as king forever.

11 Yahweh will give strength to his people.

Yahweh will bless his people with peace.

A Psalm.
A Dedication Song of the Temple.
Of David.

 1 I will extol you, O Yahweh,

for you have drawn me up

and have not made my foes

 to rejoice over me.

 2 O Yahweh my God,

I cried out to you for help, and you have healed me.

3 O Yahweh, you have brought up my soul from Sheol.

 You have kept me alive,

that I should not go down to the pit.

4
Sing praise to Yahweh, O you faithful ones of his.

Yes, give thanks to his holy name.

5 For his anger is but for a moment.

His favor is for a lifetime.

Weeping may last through the night,

but joy comes in the morning.

6
As for me, I said in my tranquility,

 “I will never be shaken.”

7 O Yahweh, when you favored me,

 you made my mountain stand strong;

but when you hid your face, I was dismayed.

8 I cried out to you, O Yahweh.

Yes, to the Lord I sought favor:

9 “What profit is there in my blood

if I go down to the pit?

 Will the dust praise you?

 Will it declare your faithfulness?

10 Hear, O Yahweh, and show me favor.

 O Yahweh, be my helper.”

11
You have turned my mourning into dancing for me.

 You have unwrapped my sackcloth

and wrapped my waist with gladness,

12 in order that my glory will make music to you and will not be silent

O Yahweh my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

A Psalm of David.

 1 In you, O Yahweh, I seek refuge;

 may I never be ashamed

 Deliver me by your righteousness.

2 Turn your ear to me. Deliver me quickly.

Be to me a rock of protection,

 a stronghold to deliver me.

3 For you are my rock and my fortress,

 therefore for your name’s sake

you will guide me and lead me.

4 Rescue me out of the net

that they have secretly set for me,

 for you are my protection.

5 Into your hand I entrust my spirit.

You redeem me, O Yahweh, God of faithfulness

6
I hate those who are devoted to worthless idols,

 but I trust in Yahweh.

7 I will be glad and rejoice in your covenant faithfulness,

for you have seen my affliction.

You know the distresses of my soul.

8 You have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy.

You have set my feet in a large place.

9
Have favor on me, O Yahweh,

 for I am in distress.

My eye is wasted away in grief; my soul, even my body.

10 For my life is spent with sorrow,

 And my years with groaning.

 My strength fails

 because of my iniquity.

 My bones are wasted away.

11 Because of all my adversaries

 I have become a disgrace,

even much more to my neighbors,

and a fear to those who know me.

Those who saw me on the street fled from me.

12 I have been forgotten from their hearts

like a dead man. I am like a broken vessel.

13 For I have heard the slander of many—terror is on every side!—

as they conspire together against me,

as they plot to take away my soul.

14
But I trust in you, O Yahweh.

I said, “You are my God.”

15 My times are in your hand.

Deliver me from the hand of my enemies

 and from those pursuing me.

16 Make your face to shine on your servant.

Deliver me because of your covenant faithfulness!

17 Let me not be ashamed, O Yahweh, for I have called on you.

 Let the wicked be ashamed!

Let them be silent in Sheol.

18 Let the deceptive lips become mute,

those that speak arrogantly against a righteous person

 with pride and contempt.

19
How great is your goodness

that you have stored up for those who fear you,

that you have done for those

who have sought refuge in you in the presence of the sons of men!

20 In the covering of your presence

you will hide them from the plotting of man.

You will shelter them secretly in a dwelling

away from the strife of tongues.

 21 Blessed be Yahweh,

for he has marvelously performed his covenant faithfulness to me

 in a city under siege.

22 As for me, I said in my alarm,

“I am cut off from before your eyes.”

 Yet surely you have heard

 the sound of my petitions

when I cried out to you for help.

23 Love Yahweh, all you his faithful ones!

 Yahweh watches over the loyal

and fully repays the person who acts with pride.

24 Be strong and let your heart take courage,

all you who wait for Yahweh.

Of David.
A meditation.

 1 Blessed is the person

 Whose transgression is forgiven,

 whose sin is covered.

 2 Blessed is the person

to whom Yahweh does not count iniquity,

and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

3
When I kept silent, my bones wore out

because of my groaning all day long.

4 For day and night your hand was heavy on me.

 My vitality was turned

as in the heat of summer. Selah.

5 I declared my sin to you.

I did not cover up my iniquity.

 I said,

“I will confess my transgressions to Yahweh,”

and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

6
For this, may everyone who is faithful pray to you

in a time when you may be found.

Surely if there is a flood of mighty waters,

 they will not reach him.

7 You are a covering for me.

You will guard me from distress.

You will surround me with ringing cries of deliverance. Selah.

8
I will instruct you and teach you in the road that you are to walk.

I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

9 Do not be like a horse or like a mule,

 which do not understand,

which are controlled by bit and bridle

or else they will not come near to you.

10
Many pains belong to the wicked person,

but covenant faithfulness will surround the one

 who trusts in Yahweh.

11 Be glad in Yahweh and rejoice,

 O you righteous ones!

 Yes, shout for joy,

all you who are upright in heart!

1 Exult in Yahweh, O you righteous ones!

Praise is fitting for the upright.

2 Offer praise to Yahweh with a lyre.

Sing praises to him with a harp of ten strings.

3 Sing to him a new song.

String skillfully accompanied with a shout of joy!

4
For the word of Yahweh is upright.

Yes, each of his works is done in faithfulness.

5 He loves righteousness and justice.

The earth is full of the covenant faithfulness of Yahweh.

6
By the word of Yahweh, the heavens were made;

Yes, by the breath of his mouth, all their armies.

7 He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap.

He places the depths into storehouses.

8 Let all the earth fear Yahweh.

Let all the inhabitants of the earth stand in awe of him.

9 For he spoke, and it was done.

He commanded, and it stood firm.

10
Yahweh crushes the counsel of the nations.

He frustrates the plans of the peoples.

 11 The counsel of Yahweh will stand forever;

the plans of his heart to all generations.

 12 Blessed is the nation whose God is Yahweh;

the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.

13
Yahweh looks from heaven.

He sees all the children of men.

14 From the place of his habitation

he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth,

 15 The creator of their hearts;

he understands all of their works.

16 There is no king saved by the multitude of an army.

A mighty man is not delivered by great strength.

17 A horse is a deceptive thing for one’s deliverance,

neither can it rescue any by its great power.

18
Behold, Yahweh’s eye looks towards those who fear him,

on those who hope in his covenant faithfulness

19 to deliver their soul from death,

and to keep them alive in the famine.

20
Our soul has waited for Yahweh.

He is our help and our shield.

21 For our heart rejoices in him,

because we have trusted in his sacred name.

 22 Let your covenant faithfulness

 be on us, O Yahweh,

since we have hoped in you.

His song of praise will always be in my mouth.

2 My soul will boast in Yahweh.

May the afflicted hear it and may they rejoice!

3 Oh magnify Yahweh with me!

Let us exalt his name together!

4
I sought Yahweh, and he answered me,

yes, he delivered me from all my fears.

5 Look to him and be radiant.

Then their faces will never be ashamed.

6 This afflicted person cried out and Yahweh heard him,

and delivered him out of all his distress.

7 The angel of Yahweh encamps

around those who fear him, and delivers them.

8
Oh taste and see that Yahweh is good.

Blessed is the man who seeks refuge in him.

9 Fear Yahweh, O you his holy ones,

for those who fear him have no lack.

10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger,

 but those who seek Yahweh

will not lack any good thing.

11
Come, you children, listen to me.

I will teach you the fear of Yahweh.

12 Who is the person who desires life,

loving his days, so that he may see good?

13 Guard your tongue from evil

and your lips from speaking deceit.

14 Turn away from evil and do good.

 Seek peace, and pursue it.

15
Yahweh’s eyes are toward the righteous.

Yes, his ears listen to their cry for help.

16 Yahweh’s face is against those who do evil,

to destroy the memory of them from the earth.

17 The righteous cry out and Yahweh hears,

and delivers them out of all their distresses.

18 Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart

and he delivers those who have a crushed spirit.

19
Many evils happen to a righteous person,

but Yahweh delivers him out of them all.

20 He keeps watch over all of his bones.

Not one of them is broken.

21 Evil will kill a wicked person.

Yes, those who hate a righteous person

 will suffer punishment.

22 Yahweh redeems the soul of his servants.

Indeed, none of those who seek refuge in him

 will suffer punishment.

Of David.

1 Contend, O Yahweh, with those who contend with me.

Fight against those who fight against me.

2 Take hold of shield and buckler

and stand up for my help.

3 And draw the spear and lance to meet

 those who pursue me.

Tell my soul, “I am your salvation.”

4
Let those who seek after my soul

 be ashamed and humiliated.

Let those who devise evil against me

 be turned back and ashamed.

5 Let them become like chaff before the wind,

when the angel of Yahweh drives them away.

6 Let their road be dark and slippery,

when the angel of Yahweh is pursuing them.

 7 For without cause they have hidden their net in a pit for me;

without cause they have dug a pit for my soul.

8 Let destruction come on him unawares.

Yes, let his own net that he has hidden capture him.

Let him fall into that very destruction.

9
Then my soul will be joyful in Yahweh.

It will rejoice in his salvation.

10 All my bones will say,

 “Yahweh, who is like you,

 who delivers the afflicted person from him who is too strong for him;

yes, the afflicted person and the needy from one who robs him?”

11
Violent witnesses rise up.

They interrogate me about things of which I am unaware.

12 They repay me evil instead of good

to the bereavement of my soul.

13 But as for me, when they were sick,

 my clothing was sackcloth.

I humbled my soul with fasting,

But my prayer returned into my own bosom.

14 I walked to and fro as though he had been a friend or a brother to me.

I bowed down, dressed in dark clothing

like the mourning for a mother.

15 But at my stumbling, they rejoiced,

 and assembled together.

The oppressors gathered themselves together against me

 Whom I did not know.

They slandered me and did not cease.

16 With godless and relentless mocking,

they gnashed their teeth at me.

17
O Lord, how long will you look on?

Rescue my soul from their ravages,

my only life from young lions.

18 I will give you thanks in the great assembly.

I will praise you among many people.

 19 Do not let those who are my deceitful enemies rejoice over me;

neither let those who hate me without a cause

 wink their eyes.

20 For they do not speak peace,

 but they devise deceitful words

against those who are quiet in the land.

21 Yes, they opened their mouth wide against me.

They said, “Aha! Aha! Our eyes have seen it!”

22
You have seen it, O Yahweh. Do not keep silent!

O Lord, do not be far away from me.

23 Rouse yourself! Yes, rise up to justice for me, O my God!

Yes, O Lord, rouse yourself on behalf of my dispute.

24 Judge me, O Yahweh my God,

 according to your righteousness.

And do not let them rejoice over me.

25 Do not let them say in their heart,

 “Aha! Our desire!”

 Do not let them say,

 “We have swallowed him up!”

 26 Let them be ashamed and humiliated together;

those who rejoiced at my misfortune.

Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor

 who magnify themselves against me.

27
Let them shout for joy and be glad

those who delight in my righteousness.

 Yes, let them say continually,

 “Let Yahweh be magnified,

who delights in the well-being of his servant!”

28 And my tongue will proclaim your righteousness,

singing a song of praise all day long.

For the Musical Director.
Of David, the servant of Yahweh.

1 An inspired utterance is within my heart

about the transgression of the wicked person:

“There is no fear of God before his eyes.”

 2 For he flatters himself in his own eyes;

unable to detect his iniquity and come to hate it.

3 The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit.

He has ceased to be wise and to do good.

4 He plots wickedness while lying upon his bed.

He sets himself on a road that is not good.

 He does not reject evil.

5
Your covenant faithfulness, O Yahweh, is in the heavens.

 Your faithfulness reaches the clouds.

6 Your righteousness is like the mountains of God.

Your judgments are like the great depths.

O Yahweh, you will deliver man and animal.

7 How precious is your covenant faithfulness, O God!

Yes, the children of men seek refuge under the shadow of your wings.

8 They will drink from the abundance of your house.

Yes, you will give them to drink from the river of your Eden.

9 For with you is the fountain of life.

In your light will we see light.

10
Oh extend your covenant faithfulness to those who know you,

yes, your righteousness to the upright in heart.

11 Do not let the foot of pride come against me.

Do not let the hand of the wicked drive me away.

12 The workers of iniquity are there; fallen.

They are thrust down and are not able to rise.

Of David.

1 Do not be agitated because of evildoers,

neither be envious against those who work injustice.

2 For they will wither quickly like the grass

and they will wilt like the green herb.

3
Trust in Yahweh and do good.

Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.

4 Yes, delight yourself in Yahweh,

and he will give you the petitions of your heart.

5
Commit your road to Yahweh.

Yes, trust in him, and he will do it:

6 he will bring forth your righteousness like the light,

and your justice as the noonday sun.

7
Keep quiet before Yahweh and wait patiently for him.

 Do not be agitated because of the one who makes his road prosper;

because of the person who carried out wicked plans.

8
Cease from anger and forsake wrath.

Do not be agitated, it leads to evildoing.

9 For evildoers will be cut off,

but those who wait for Yahweh

 will inherit the land.

10
Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more.

Yes, though you look all over for his place, yet he will not be.

11 But the humble will inherit the land,

and will delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

12
A wicked person is against the righteous person,

and gnashes at him with his teeth.

13 The Lord laughs at him,

for he sees that his day is coming.

14
The wicked have drawn out a sword, and have bent their bow

 to cause the afflicted person and poor person to fall;

to slaughter those who are upright in their road.

15 Their sword will enter into their own heart.

And their bows will be broken.

16
Better is a little that the righteous person has

than the abundance of many wicked people.

17 For the arms of the wicked will be broken,

 but Yahweh supports the righteous.

18
Yahweh knows the days of the blameless.

 Their inheritance will be forever.

19 They will not be ashamed in an evil time.

Yes, in times of famine they will be satisfied.

20
For the wicked will perish.

Yes, the enemies of Yahweh will be like the beauty of the fields.

 They will vanish—

 vanish like the smoke.

21
A wicked person borrows and does not repay,

but a righteous person shows favor and gives.

22 For those who are blessed by him will inherit the land.

But those who are cursed by him will be cut off.

23
A man’s steps are established by Yahweh.

 He delights in his roadway.

24 If he falls, he will not be hurled down,

 for Yahweh supports his hand.

25
I have been young and now am old,

yet I have not seen a righteous person forsaken,

nor his offspring begging for bread.

26 All day long he shows favor and lends.

 And his offspring is blessed.

27
Turn from evil, and do good.

 Then live forever.

 28 For Yahweh loves justice,

and does not forsake his faithful ones.

 They are guarded forever,

but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off.

29 The righteous will inherit the land

 and live in it forever.

30
The mouth of a righteous person utters wisdom.

 Yes, his tongue speaks justice.

31 The Torah of his God is in his heart.

 His steps will not waver.

32
A wicked person spies upon the righteous person

 and seeks to kill him.

33 Yahweh will not leave him in his hand,

nor condemn him when he is brought to trial.

34
Wait for Yahweh and keep watch over his road,

and he will raise you up to inherit the land.

When the wicked are cut off, you will see it.

35
I have seen a wicked person acting violently,

flourishing like a luxurious tree in its native soil.

36 But I passed by, and behold, he was not.

Yes, I sought him, but he could not be found.

37
Watch a blameless person and see the upright,

for there is a future for a person of peace.

38 But those who rebel, they will be destroyed together.

The future of the wicked will be cut off.

39
But the salvation of the righteous is from Yahweh.

He is their mountain stronghold in a time of distress.

40 Yes, Yahweh will help them and deliver them.

He will deliver them from the wicked and save them,

because they have sought refuge in him.

A Psalm of David,
for a remembrance.

1 O Yahweh, do not reprove me in your wrath,

nor correct me in your burning anger.

2 For your arrows have pierced me,

your hand presses hard on me.

3
There is no soundness in my flesh

 because of your indignation.

There is no wholeness in my bones

 because of my sin.

4 For my iniquities have overpowered me.

Like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me.

5 My wounds stink and have festered

 because of my foolishness.

6 I am bent over and bowed down greatly.

I walk about wearing mourner’s clothing all day long.

7 For my loins are filled with burning.

There is no soundness in my flesh.

8 I am numb and severely crushed.

I roar due to the groaning of my heart.

9
O Lord, all my desire is before you.

And my groaning is not hidden from you.

10 My heart throbs. My strength has left me.

And the light of my eyes, even that is not with me.

11 My loved ones and my friends stand back from my plague.

 My relatives stand far away.

12 Those who seek after my soul lay down traps.

Those who seek my injury speak destructive things,

and they say deceitful things all day long.

13
But I, like a deaf man, do not listen.

I am like a mute man

who does not open his mouth.

14 Yes, I have become like a man who does not hear,

yes, in his mouth are no reproofs.

15 Because in you, O Yahweh, I do hope.

You will answer, O Lord my God.

16 For I said, “Do not let them rejoice over me.”

They magnified themselves over me when my foot slipped.

17 For I am ready to fall.

Yes, my pain is continually with me.

18 For I will declare my iniquity.

I am anxious concerning my sin.

19 But my enemies are alive and mighty.

Those treacherous people who hate me are numerous.

20 Those who repay evil for good are my adversaries,

because I pursue what is good.

21
Do not forsake me, O Yahweh.

My God, do not be far from me.

 22 Hurry to help me,

 O Lord, my salvation.

A Psalm of David.

1 I said, “I will watch my ways

so that I do not sin with my tongue.

I will keep my mouth with a bridle

while the wicked is before me.”

2 I was mute with silence.

I held my peace, even from good.

 My sorrow was stirred up.

3 My heart was hot within me.

 While I meditated, the fire burned;

 I spoke with my tongue:

4 “O Yahweh, show me my end,

what is the measure of my days.

Let me know how frail I am.

5 Behold, you have made my days handbreadths.

My lifetime is as nothing before you.

Surely every man stands as a breath.” Selah.

6
“Surely every person walks like a shadow.

Surely they busy themselves in vain.

He heaps up and does not know who will gather.

7 Now, O Lord, what do I wait for?

 My hope is in you.

8 Deliver me from all my transgressions.

Do not make me the reproach of the foolish.

9 I was mute. I did not open my mouth,

 because you did it.

10 Remove your scourge away from me.

I am overcome by the blow of your hand.

11 When you rebuke and correct man for his guilt,

You consume his wealth like a moth.

Surely every man is but a breath.” Selah.

12
“Hear my prayer, O Yahweh,

and give ear to my cry.

Do not be silent at my tears.

For I am a stranger with you,

a foreigner, as all my fathers were.

13 Oh spare me, that I may recover strength,

before I go away and exist no more.”

For the Musical Director.
A Psalm of David.

1 I waited patiently for Yahweh.

He turned to me and heard my cry.

2 He brought me up also out of a desolate pit,

 out of the miry clay.

 He set my feet on a rock;

and gave me a firm place to stand.

3 He has put a new song in my mouth,

 even praise to our God.

Many will see that and fear,

 and will trust in Yahweh.

4
Blessed is the man

 who makes Yahweh his trust

and does not respect the proud,

nor those who turn aside to lies.

5 Many, O Yahweh my God, are the wonderful works that you have done,

and your thoughts that are toward us.

Nothing can be declared back to you.

If I would declare and speak of them,

they are more than can be numbered.

6
Sacrifice and offering you did not desire.

 You have opened my ears.

You have not required burnt offering and sin offering.

7 Then I said, “Behold, I have come.

It is written about me in the book in the scroll.

8 I delight to do your will, O my God.

Yes, your law is inside my heart.”

9
I have proclaimed glad news of righteousness in the great assembly.

Behold, I will not seal my lips,

 O Yahweh, you know.

10 I have not hidden your righteousness inside my heart.

I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation.

I have not concealed your loving kindness

and your truth from the great assembly.

11
Do not withhold your tender mercies from me, O Yahweh.

Let your loving kindness and your truth continually preserve me.

12 For innumerable evils have surrounded me.

My iniquities have overtaken me so that I am not able to look up.

They are more than the hairs of my head.

 My heart has failed me.

13 Be pleased, O Yahweh, to deliver me.

Hurry to help me, O Yahweh.

14
Let them be disappointed and confounded together

who seek after my soul to destroy it.

Let them be turned backward and humiliated

 who delight in my hurt.

15 Let those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!” be appalled because of their shame!

16
Let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you.

Let such as love your salvation say continually,

 “Let Yahweh be exalted!”

17 But I am poor and needy.

May the Lord think about me.

You are my help and my deliverer.

Do not delay, O my God.

A Psalm of David.

1 Blessed is he who considers the weak.

Yahweh will deliver him in a time of distress.

2 Yahweh will keep watch over and preserve his life.

He will bless him in the land.

And will not give him over to the desire of his enemies.

3 Yahweh will support him on his sickbed,

you restore his entire bed in his illness.

4
I said, “O Yahweh, be gracious to me!

Heal my soul, for I have sinned against you.”

5 My enemies speak evil against me:

“When will he die, and his name perish?”

6 And even if one comes to see me, he speaks empty words.

His heart gathers wickedness to itself.

When he goes outside, he tells it.

7 All who hate me whisper together against me.

 They devise injury for me.

8 They say, “A word from Belial is poured out upon him.

Now that he lies he will rise up no more.”

9 Even my close friend whom I trusted,

 who ate my bread,

has lifted up his heel against me.

10
But you, O Yahweh, please show me favor,

and raise me up that I may repay them.

11 By this I know that you delight in me,

because my enemy does not raise a shout of triumph over me.

12 As for me, you support me in my blamelessness,

and cause me to stand in your presence forever.

13
Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel,

 from everlasting and to everlasting!

 Amen and amen.

BOOK II

For the Musical Director.
A meditation of the sons of Korah.

1 As the deer pants for the streams of water,

so my soul pants for you, O God.

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

When can I come and appear before God?

3 My tears have been my food day and night

while they ask me all day long,

 “Where is your God?”

4 These things I remember, and pour out my soul within me:

for I used to go along with the multitude

and led them in a procession to the house of God

with the voice of joy and thanksgiving,

 a crowd keeping the festival.

5
Why are you in despair, O my soul?

Why are you disturbed within me?

Hope in God! For I will still praise him

for the salvation of his presence.

6 O My God, my soul is in despair within me.

Therefore I remember you from the land of the Jordan,

the heights of Hermon, from the mountain of Mizar.

7 The depths call to the depths at the sound of your waterfalls.

All your surf and your waves have swept over me.

8 Yahweh will command his covenant faithfulness in the daytime.

In the night his song will be with me,

a prayer to my living God.

9
I will say to God, my rock,

 “Why have you forgotten me?

Why do I go walking in mourner’s clothing

because of the oppression from an enemy?”

10 As a shattering in my bones,

 my adversaries reproach me

while they say to me all day long,

 “Where is your God?”

11 Why are you in despair, O my soul?

Why are you disturbed within me?

Hope in God! For I will still praise him,

he is the salvation of my face, and my God.

Of the sons of Korah.
A meditation.

1 We have heard with our ears,

O God, our fathers have told us

what work you did in their days,

 in the days of old.

2 You drove out the nations with your hand,

 but you planted them.

 You afflicted the peoples,

 but you spread them abroad.

3 For they did not get the land in their possession by their own sword,

 nor did their own arm save them;

but your right hand and your arm,

and the light of your face,

because you were favorable to them.

4
You are my King, O God.

 Command victories for Jacob!

5 Through you will we push down our adversaries.

Through your name will we tread them under who rise up against us.

6 For I will not trust in my bow,

neither does my sword save me.

7 But you have saved us from our adversaries

and have shamed those who hate us.

 8 In God we have made our boast all day long;

we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah.

9
But now you rejected us and brought us to dishonor

and don’t go out with our armies.

10 You make us turn back from the adversary.

Those who hate us take spoil for themselves.

11 You have made us like sheep to be eaten,

and have scattered us among the nations.

12 You sell your people for nothing,

and have gained nothing from their sale.

13 You make us a reproach to our neighbors,

a scoffing and a derision to those who are around us.

14 You make us a byword among the nations,

a shaking of the head among the peoples.

15 All day long my disgrace is before me,

 and shame covers my face

16 Because of the taunt of one who reproaches and verbally abuses,

because of the enemy and the avenger.

17
All this has come on us,

yet have we not forgotten you,

neither have we been false to your covenant.

18 Our heart has not turned back,

neither have our steps strayed from your path,

19 though you have crushed us in the haunt of jackals

and covered us with the shadow of death.

20 If we have forgotten the name of our God

or spread out our hands to a strange god,

21 won’t God search this out?

For he knows the secrets of the heart.

22 Yes, for your sake we are killed all day long.

We are regarded as sheep for the slaughter.

23
Wake up! Why do you sleep, O Lord?

Arise! Do not reject us forever.

24 Why do you hide your face

and forget our affliction and our oppression?

25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust.

Our body clings to the earth.

26 Rise up to help us.

Redeem us for your loving kindness’ sake.

A meditation of the sons of Korah.
A love song.

1 My heart is stirred up with a noble theme.

I recite my deeds for the king.

My tongue is the pen of a skilled scribe.

2 You are the most beautiful of the sons of men.

Grace has been poured upon your lips,

therefore God has blessed you forever.

3
Strap your sword on your thigh, O mighty one,

in your splendor and your majesty.

4 Yes, in your majesty ride forth victoriously

on behalf of faithfulness, humility, and righteousness.

And let your right hand teach you awesome deeds.

5 Your arrows have been sharpened—

 let nations fall under you—

piercing the heart of the king’s enemies.

6
Your throne is God forever and ever.

A scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.

7 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness.

Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of exultation

 above your peers.

8 All your garments smell of myrrh and aloes and cassia.

Out of ivory palaces, stringed instruments have made you glad.

9 The daughters of kings are among your honorable women.

At your right hand the queen stands adorned in gold of Ophir.

10
Listen, O daughter; and consider and turn your ear.

And forget your own people and also your father’s house,

11 and let the king desire your beauty.

Bow down to him, for he is your lord.

12 The daughter of Tyre will come with a gift.

The rich among the people will entreat your favor.

13
The King’s daughter is all glorious within her chambers.

Her clothing is interwoven with gold.

14 She will be led to the king in colorful garments.

The virgins, her friends who follow her, will be brought to you.

15 With gladness and rejoicing they are to be led.

Yes, they will enter into the king’s palace.

16
Your sons will take the place of your fathers.

You will set them up as leaders in all the earth.

17 I will cause your name to be remembered in all generations.

Therefore the peoples will praise you forever and ever.

Of the sons of Korah.
According to young women, a song.

1 God is our refuge and protection,

a very present help in distressful times.

2 Therefore we will not fear,

 though the earth changes,

 though the mountains are shaken

into the heart of the seas,

3 though its waters roar and foam,

though the mountains quake at its swelling. Selah.

4
There is a river,

the streams of which make the city of God glad,

the holy place of the dwelling of the Most High.

5 God is in its midst. The city will not be moved.

God will help it at dawn.

6 The nations roar. The kingdoms are shaken.

He gave forth his voice and the earth melted.

7 Yahweh of Armies is with us.

The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

8
Come! See Yahweh’s works,

what desolations he has made on the earth.

9 He causes wars to cease to the end of the earth.

He shatters the bow and chops off the spear.

He burns the carts in the fire.

10 “Stop! And know that I am God.

I will be exalted among the nations.

I will be exalted in the earth.”

11 Yahweh of Armies is with us.

The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

1 Oh clap your hands, all you nations.

Shout to God with the voice of triumph!

2 For Yahweh Most High is awesome.

He is a great King over all the earth.

3 He subdues nations under us,

 and peoples under our feet.

4 He chooses our inheritance for us,

the glory of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.

5
God has gone up with a shout,

Yahweh, along with the sound of a shofar.

6 Sing praise to God, sing praises.

Sing praises to our King, sing praises.

7 For God is the King of all the earth.

 Sing praises with understanding.

8
God reigns over the nations.

God sits on his holy throne.

9 The nobles of the peoples are gathered together,

the people of the God of Abraham.

For the shields of the earth belong to God.

 He is greatly exalted!

A Song.
A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

1 Great is Yahweh, and greatly to be praised,

in the city of our God, in his holy mountain.

 2 Beautiful in elevation,

the joy of the whole earth is Mount Zion,

 on the north sides,

the city of the great King.

 3 God has shown himself

in her citadels as a refuge.

4
For, behold, the kings assembled themselves,

 they passed by together.

5 They saw it, then they were amazed.

They were dismayed. They hurried away.

6 Trembling took hold of them there,

pain, as of a woman in travail.

 7 With the east wind

you break the ships of Tarshish.

8
As we have heard, so we have seen

in the city of Yahweh of Armies,

in the city of our God.

God will establish it forever. Selah.

9
We have thought about your loving kindness, O God,

in the midst of your temple.

10 As is your name, O God,

so is your praise to the ends of the earth.

Your right hand is full of righteousness.

11 Let Mount Zion be glad!

Let the daughters of Judah rejoice

 because of your judgments.

12
Walk about Zion, and go around her.

 Number its towers.

13 Mark well her bulwarks. Consider her palaces,

so that you can tell it to the next generation.

14 For this God is our God forever and ever.

He will be our guide even to death.

A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

1 Hear this, all you peoples.

Listen, all you inhabitants of the world,

 2 both low and high,

 rich and poor together.

3 My mouth will speak words of wisdom.

 My heart will utter understanding.

4 I will incline my ear to a proverb.

I will open my riddle on the harp.

5
Why should I fear in the days of evil,

when the iniquity of those who deceive me surrounds me?

6 Those who trust in their wealth,

and boast in the multitude of their riches–

7 none of them can by any means redeem his brother,

nor give God a ransom for him.

 8 For the redemption of their life is costly;

 no payment is ever enough,

 9 so that he could live on forever;

so that he would not see the pit.

10
For he sees that wise men die;

likewise the fool and the senseless perish,

and leave their wealth to others.

11 Their inward thought is that their houses will endure forever,

and their dwelling places to all generations,

although they had named their lands after themselves.

12 But man, despite his riches, does not endure.

He is like the animals that perish.

13
This is the destiny of those who are foolish

and of those who approve their sayings. Selah.

14 They are appointed as a flock for Sheol.

 Death will be their shepherd.

The upright will have dominion over them in the morning.

Their beauty will decay in Sheol,

 far from God’s lofty habitation.

15 But God will redeem my soul

 from the power of Sheol,

for he will take me from the grave. Selah.

16
Do not be afraid when a man is made rich,

when the glory of his house is increased.

17 For when he dies he will carry nothing away.

His glory will not descend after him.

18 Though while he lived he blessed his soul–

and people praise you when you do well for yourself–

19 he will go to the generation of his fathers.

They will never see the light.

20 A man who has riches

 without understanding,

is like the animals that perish.

A Psalm of Asaph.

1 The Mighty One, God, Yahweh, spoke,

and he summons the earth from the rising to the setting of the sun.

2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,

 God has shone forth.

3 May our God come and not keep silent.

 A fire devours before him.

And a raging tempest is around him.

4 He calls to the heavens above, and to the earth,

 to judge his people:

5 “Gather my faithful ones together to me,

those who have cut a covenant with me with a sacrifice.”

6 And the heavens will declare his righteousness,

 for God himself judges. Selah.

7
“Hear, my people, and I will speak;

and I will testify against you, O Israel.

 I am God, your God.

8 I do not reprove you for your sacrifices.

And your burnt offerings are continually before me.

9 I will not take a young bull from your house,

 nor he-goats from your folds.

10 For every living thing in the forest is mine,

and the cattle on 1,000 hills.

11 I know every bird of the mountains.

And everything that moves in the field is mine.

 12 If I were hungry, I would not tell you;

for the world is mine, and all its fullness.

13 Will I eat the flesh of bulls,

or drink the blood of he-goats?

 14 Sacrifice to God thanksgiving!

And fulfill your vows to the Most High.

15 And call on me in times of distress.

I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”

16
But to the wicked person, God says,

“What right do you have to recite my statutes,

and to take up my covenant in your mouth?

 17 For you hate instruction

and throw my words behind you.

18 When you saw a thief,

 you were pleased with him,

and you shared company with adulterers.

19 You harness your tongue to evil.

 Your tongue frames deceit.

20 You sit and speak against your brother.

You even slander your own mother’s son.

21 You have done these things, and I kept silent.

You thought that I was just like you.

 I will reprove you

and make my legal case in front of your eyes.

22
Now discern this, all you who forget God,

lest I tear you into pieces

and there be no one to deliver.

23 The one who sacrifices thanksgiving honors me,

 and prepares his road.

I will show him the salvation of God.”

A Psalm of David,
when Nathan the prophet came to him after he had gone in to Bathsheba.

1 Show favor to me, O God,

 according to your covenant faithfulness.

According to the multitude of your tender mercies,

 blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,

and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions.

And my sin is constantly before me.

4 Against you, you alone, I have sinned,

 and done what is evil in your eyes;

so that you may be justified when you speak

 and pure when you judge.

5 Behold, I was brought forth in guilt.

And in sin my mother conceived me.

6
Behold, you desire faithfulness in the inward parts.

And you declare wisdom to me secretly.

7 Purify me with hyssop and I will be clean.

Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

8 Let me hear joy and gladness,

that the bones that you have crushed may rejoice.

9 Hide your face from my sins,

and blot out all of my guilt.

10
Create in me a pure heart, O God.

And renew a steadfast spirit within me.

11 Do not cast me away from your presence

and do not take your holy spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation.

And support me with a willing spirit.

13 I will teach transgressors your roads.

Then sinners will turn to you.

14
Deliver me from bloodguilt, O God,

 the God of my salvation.

My tongue will shout with joy concerning your righteousness.

15 O Lord, open my lips.

Then my mouth will declare your praise.

16 For you do not delight in sacrifice, or else I would give it.

You have no pleasure in a burnt offering.

17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit.

A broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

18
Do good in your favor to Zion.

 Rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

 19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of my righteousness;

a burnt offering and a whole burnt offering.

Then they will offer bulls on your altar.

when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, “David has come to Abimelech's house.”

1 Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man?

God’s covenant faithfulness endures all day long.

 O worker of deceit.

deception rather than speaking righteous things. Selah.

4 You love all words that devour,

 O tongue of deceit.

5
Therefore God will bring you to ruin forever.

He will snatch you up and tear you out of your tent,

and uproot you out of the land of the living. Selah.

6 Then the righteous will see it, and fear,

and they will laugh at him, saying,

 7 “Behold the person

who did not set God as his mountain stronghold!

 Instead he trusted in the abundance of his riches;

and he strengthened himself in his evil desire.”

8
But as for me, I am like a flourishing olive tree

 in the house of God.

I trust in God’s covenant faithfulness forever and ever.

9 I will praise you forever, because you have done this.

Yes, I will hope in your name, for it is good,

in the presence of your faithful people.

To the tune of “Mahalath.”
A meditation of David.

1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”

They are corrupt and have done abominable iniquity.

There is no one who does good.

2 God looks down from heaven on the children of men,

to see if there are any who understood,

 who seek after God.

3 Every one of them has gone back.

 They have become filthy together.

There is no one who does good,

 no, not one.

4
Have the workers of iniquity no knowledge,

who eat up my people as they eat bread,

and do not call upon God?

5 There they were in great fear,

 where no fear was,

 for God has scattered

the bones of him who encamps against you.

You have put them to shame

 because God has rejected them.

6
Oh that the salvation of Israel would come out of Zion!

When God brings back his people from captivity,

then Jacob will rejoice, and Israel will be glad.

1 Save me, O God, by your name.

 Vindicate me in your might.

2 O God, hear my prayer.

Listen to the words of my mouth.

3 For strangers have risen up against me.

Violent men have sought after my soul.

They have not set God before them. Selah.

4
Behold, God is my helper.

The Lord is the one who sustains my soul.

5 He will repay the evil to my enemies.

A meditation of David.

1 Listen to my prayer, O God.

Do not hide yourself from my supplication.

2 Attend to me and answer me.

I am restless in my complaint, and moan

3 because of the voice of the enemy,

because of the oppression of the wicked.

For they bring suffering on me.

In anger they hold a grudge against me.

4
My heart is severely pained within me.

The terrors of death have fallen on me.

5 Fearfulness and trembling have come on me.

 Horror has overwhelmed me.

6 I said, “Oh that I had wings like a dove!

Then I would fly away and be at rest.

7 Behold, then I would wander far off.

I would lodge in the wilderness.” Selah.

 8 “I would hurry to a shelter

from the stormy wind and storm.”

9
Confuse them, O Lord, and confound their language,

for I have seen violence and strife in the city.

10 Day and night they prowl around on its walls.

Malice and abuse are also inside her.

11 Destructive forces are inside her.

Threats and lies don’t depart from her streets.

12
For it was not an enemy who insulted me;

then I could have endured it.

 Neither was it he who hated me who raised himself up against me;

then I would have hidden myself from him.

13 But it was you, a man like me,

my companion and my familiar friend.

14 We took sweet fellowship together.

We walked in God’s house with company.

15
Let death come suddenly on them.

Let them go down alive into Sheol.

For wickedness is in their dwelling, in their midst.

16 As for me, I will call on God.

 Yahweh will save me.

17 Evening, morning and at noon, I will cry out in distress.

 He will hear my voice.

18 He has redeemed my soul in peace from the battle that was against me,

although there are many who oppose me.

19 God, who is enthroned forever,

will hear and answer them. Selah.

 They never change,

those who do not fear God.

20
He raises his hands against his friends.

 He has violated his covenant.

21 His mouth was smooth as butter,

 but his heart was war.

His words were softer than oil,

 yet they were drawn swords.

22
Cast your burden on Yahweh,

 and he will sustain you.

He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

23
But you, O God, will bring them down

 into the pit of destruction.

 Bloodthirsty and deceitful men

will not live out half their days,

but I will trust in you.

To the tune of “Silent Dove in Distant Lands.”
An inscribed poem of David when the Philistines seized him in Gath.

1 Be merciful to me, O God, for man wants to swallow me.

All day long, he attacks and oppresses me.

2 My enemies want to swallow me up all day long,

for they are many who fight proudly against me.

3
When I am afraid,

I will put my trust in you.

4 In God I praise his word.

In God I put my trust. I will not be afraid.

What can flesh do to me?

5
All day long they twist my words.

All their thoughts are against me for evil.

 6 They conspire and lurk;

 watching my steps,

they are eager to take my life.

7 Will they escape by iniquity?

In anger, cast down the peoples, O God.

8
You number my wanderings.

You put my tears into your bottle.

 Aren’t they in your book?

9 Then my enemies will turn back in the day that I call.

I know this: that God is for me.

10
In God I will praise his word.

In Yahweh I will praise his word.

11 I have put my trust in God. I will not be afraid.

What can man do to me?

12
Your vows are on me, O God.

I will give thank offerings to you.

13 For you have delivered my soul from death,

and prevented my feet from falling,

that I may walk before God in the light of the living.

To the tune of “Do Not ruin.”
An inscribed poem of David, when he fled from Saul, in the cave.

1 Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,

for my soul takes refuge in you.

Yes, in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge

 until disaster has passed.

2 I cry out to God Most High,

to God who accomplishes my requests for me.

 3 He will send from heaven and save me;

he rebukes the one who is pursuing me. Selah.

God will send out his loving kindness and his truth.

4 My soul is among lions.

I lie among those who are set on fire,

even the sons of men whose teeth are spears and arrows,

and their tongue a sharp sword.

5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens!

Let your glory be above all the earth!

6 They have prepared a net for my steps.

My soul is bowed down in distress.

 They dig a pit ahead of me;

but they fall into its middle themselves! Selah.

7
My heart is steadfast, God, my heart is steadfast.

I will sing, yes, I will sing praises.

 8 Wake up, my glory!

 Wake up, psaltery and harp!

I will wake up the dawn.

9 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, among the peoples.

I will sing praises to you among the nations.

10 For your great loving kindness reaches to the heavens,

and your truth to the skies.

11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens.

Let your glory be over all the earth.
