1 A good name is to be chosen over great wealth;
favor is better than silver and gold.
2 The rich and the poor person meet one another in this:
Yahweh is the one who creates them all.
3 A prudent person sees evil and hides,
but the naïve continue on and are punished.
4 The reward of humility—the fear of Yahweh—
is wealth, glory, and life.
5 Thorns and traps are on the road of the twisted person;
the one who watches over his life will stay far from them.
6 Train a child in the way he should go;
even when he grows old he will not turn aside from it.
7 The rich person rules over the poor,
and the one who borrows is a slave to the one who lends.
8 The one who sows injustice will reap wickedness,
and the rod of his anger will fail.
9 The generous person himself will be blessed
because he gave of his bread to the poor.
10 Drive out the mocker and strife will go out,
even quarrelling and insults will cease.
11 The person who loves a pure heart,
whose lips are gracious—a king is his friend.
12 The eyes of Yahweh guard knowledge,
but he overturns the words of the one acting unfaithfully.
13 The lazy person says, “There is a lion in the street!
I will be killed out in the open.”
14 The mouth of strange women is a deep pit;
the person with whom Yahweh is angry will fall in there.
15 Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child;
a rod of discipline will drive it far from him.
16 The one who oppresses the poor does so for his own gain;
the one who gives to the rich surely will come to poverty.
17 Incline your ear and listen to the words of the wise,
and apply your heart to my knowledge,
18 for it is delightful when you keep them within you,
then they will be established together upon your lips.
19 So that your trust may be in Yahweh,
I have made them known to you today—yes, you.
20 Have I not written to you thirty sayings
containing counsel and knowledge,
21 to make known to you true words of faithfulness,
and to return words of faithfulness to those who sent you?
22 Do not rob a poor person because he is poor,
and do not crush the needy at the gate.
23 For Yahweh will defend their case,
and he will rob the life of those who robbed them.
24 Do not make friends with one who has great anger,
and do not go along with an angry person,
25 lest you learn his path
and get your soul caught in a snare.
26 Do not be among those who shake hands in a pledge,
among those who put up security for loans.
27 If you have nothing with which to pay,
why should he take your bed out from under you?
28 Do not move the ancient boundary marker
that your fathers made.
29 Do you see a man skilled in his occupation?
He will take his stand before kings;
he will not take his stand before obscure people.
