1 The one who isolates himself seeks his own desire;
he quarrels with every piece of sound advice.
2 A fool does not delight in understanding,
but only in expressing his own mind.
3 When a wicked person enters, contempt also enters,
and with dishonor comes scorn.
4 The words of a person’s mouth are deep waters,
a flowing stream, a fountain of wisdom.
5 It is not good to show favoritism toward a wicked person—
depriving a righteous person from justice.
6 The lips of a fool bring strife,
and his mouth calls for beatings.
7 The mouth of a fool will bring destruction to him,
and his lips are a snare to his soul.
8 The words of a gossipa are like delicacies,
and they go down into one’s innermost being.
9 Moreover, the one who shows himself to be lax in his work
is a brother to the one who destroys.
10 Yahweh’s name is a strong tower;
the righteous person runs to it and is secure.
11 A rich person’s wealth is his strong city,
indeed, like a high wall in his imagination.
12 Before disaster the heart of a person is puffed-up,
but humility goes before glory.
13 The person who gives an answer before he listens—
foolishness and disgrace belong to him.
14 A person’s spirit can endure his sickness,
but a broken spirit, who can bear that?
15 The heart of one who understands gets knowledge,
and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
16 A person’s gift creates opportunity for him
and leads him before great people.
17 The first person to speak in his dispute appears righteous
until a neighbor comes and questions him.
18 Casting lots causes quarrels to cease
and decides between mighty opponents.
19 An offended brother is harder to win than a strong city,
and contentions are like the barred gate of a castle.
20 A person’s stomach will be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth;
he will be satisfied from the revenue of his lips.
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
and those who love that power will eat of its fruit.
22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing,
and he obtains favor from Yahweh.
23 The poor person who speaks pleads for favor,
but the rich person answers forcefully.
24 A person has many friends to socialize with,
but there is one who loves who stays closer than a brother.
