“she did it to prepare me for burial.” The perfume was very expensive and therefore likely quite strong, and so it is possible that there could have been a faint smell of it even days later when Jesus was buried. It is impossible to know what the disciples thought Jesus meant when he spoke of his burial. They did not expect him to die, much less be buried. However, taking Matthew 26:12 literally could well show us that in contrast to the disciples who did not know Jesus was going to die, Mary believed what Jesus said about dying and anointed his body as part of the preparation for death and burial (cp. Mark 14:8).
