Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,
“Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to pay homagea to him.”
Now, when Herod the king heard this, he was deeply troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
And gathering together all the high priests and experts in the law from among the People,b he inquired of them where the Christc would be born.
And they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, because this is what has been written by the prophet:
And you Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means the least among the leaders of Judah. For out of you will come a leader who will shepherd my people, Israel.”d
Then Herod secretly called for the Magi and found out from them the time when the star appeared.
And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, “Go and search diligently for the child, and as soon as you find him, report back to me so that I can come and pay homagee to him as well.”
So, after listening to the king, they went on their way. And Look! The star that they had seen when it rose was going ahead of them until it came and stood over where the child was.
And seeing the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.
And when they came into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and falling down to their knees, they paid homagef to him. And after opening their treasure boxes, they presented gifts to him: gold and frankincense and myrrh.
And having been instructed by God in a dream not to return to Herod, they returned to their country by a different road.
Now after they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Get up! Take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, because Herod is about to search for the child to destroy him.”
Then he got up and took the child and his mother during the night, and departed for Egypt,
and stayed there until the death of Herod, with the result that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet was fulfilled, saying, Out of Egypt I called my son.g
Then Herod, when he realized that he had been tricked by the Magi, became furious, and having sent orders, he killed all the male children that were in Bethlehem and all its surrounding region, from two years old and under, based on the timing that he had found out from the Magi.
Then what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying,
A sound was heard in Ramah, sobbing and great mourning. Rachel was crying for her children, and she did not want to be comforted because they are no more.h
Now after Herod had died,i behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
saying, “Get up! Take the child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel, because those who were seeking to take the child’s life have died.”
Then he got up and took the child and his mother, and went into the land of Israel.
But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Instead, after being instructed by God in a dream, he departed into the district of Galilee.
And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken through the prophets was fulfilled, that he will be called a Nazarene.
