The Temptation in the Desert

Then Jesus was led up by the spirit into the desert to be tempted by the Devil.a
And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards he was hungry.
And the Tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
But he answered and said, “It is written, Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.b

Then the Devil took him into the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple
and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, He will give his angels a command concerning you, and, On their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.”c
Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, Do not tempt Yahweh your God.d

Again, the Devil took him to an exceedingly lofty mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them,
and he said to him, “All these things I will give you if you will fall down and worship me.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Adversary! For it is written, Worship Yahweh your God, and serve him only.e
Then the Devil left him and Look! Angels came and were ministering to him.

Jesus Begins to Preach

Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee,
and leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which is by the lake,f in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
with the result that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying,
The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, along the Road of the Sea,g beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
the people who sat in darkness saw a great light, and to those who sat in death’s territory and shadow, to them did light spring up.h

From that time on Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven has drawn near.”

The Calling of Disciples

And walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother—casting a net into the lake,i for they were fishermen.
And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of people.”
And immediately they left their nets and followed him.
And going on from there he saw two other brothers—James the son of Zebedee and John his brother—in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them.
And immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him.

Jesus’ Fame Spreads

And Jesus went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.
And the report of him went out into all Syria, and they brought to him all who were sick, taken with various diseases and torments, and afflicted by demons, and epileptic, and paralyzed, and he healed them.
And large crowds followed him from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the Jordan.
