Religious Leaders Demand a Sign

And the Pharisees and Sadducees came and, testing him, they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
But he answered and said to them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the heavens are red.’
And in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the heavens are red and threatening.’ You know how to discern the face of the heavens, but you are not able to discern the signs of the times.
An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” And he left them, and departed.

The Leaven of Wrong Doctrine

And the disciples came to the other side of the lake, but they had forgotten to take bread.
And Jesus said to them, “Watch out, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
And they began to discuss this among themselves, saying, “We did not take any bread.”
And Jesus, realizing this, said, “O you of little trust, why are you discussing among yourselves that you do not have any bread?
Do you still not understand? Do you not remember the five loaves for the 5,000, and how many baskets you collected,
nor the seven loaves for the 4,000, and how many baskets you collected?
How is it that you do not perceive that I did not speak to you about bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Peter’s Confession of Christ

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; and others say Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
And Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ,a the Son of the living God.”
And Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my congregation, and the gates of the grave will not prevail against it.
I will give to you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you forbid on earth must be already forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth must be already permitted in heaven.”
Then he ordered the disciples that they should not tell anyone that he was the Christ.

Death and Resurrection Foretold

From that time Jesus began to show to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and experts in the law, and be killed, and the third day be raised from the dead.
And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Be it far from you, Lord! This will never, ever, happen to you.”
But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Adversary! You are a stumbling block to me, because you are not thinking about the things of God, but the things of man.”

Take Up Your Cross

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to come after me, he must deny himself and must take up his cross, and then follow me.
For whoever wants to save his lifeb will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
For what will it profit a person if he gains the whole world and yet forfeits his life? Or what will a person give in exchange for his life?
For the Son of Man is about to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.
Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will absolutely not taste of death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Lit. “the Anointed One”
In Matt. 16:25-28, “life” is the Greek word psuchē, “soul” but in this context is means “life.”
