“subdued.” The Greek word translated “subdued” is epitimaō (#2008 ἐπιτιμάω), and this is the technical sense of the word as it was used in Greek religion for taking control over a spirit. Robert Guelich notes that epitimaō is “a commanding word uttered by God or by his spokesman, by which evil powers are brought into submission.”^a Jesus subdued the fever by the power of God, which was expressed in words.
