The Fall of Jericho

Now Jericho was shutting its gates and was shut up because of the children of Israel. No one went out and no one came in.
And Yahweh said to Joshua, “Behold, I have given Jericho into your hand and her king and the mighty men of valor.
And you are to march around the city, all you men of war, going around the city one time. Do this six days.
And seven priests are to carry seven shofars of rams’ horns ahead of the ark. And on the seventh day, you are to march around the city seven times while the priests blow on the shofars.
And it will be that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the shofar, all the people are to shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down underneath itself and the people will go up, every man straight before him.”

So Joshua the son of Nun called for the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant and let seven priests carry seven shofars of rams’ horns ahead of the ark of Yahweh.”
And he said to the people, “Go forward and march around the city and let the front troops go forward ahead of the ark of Yahweh.”

And it was so, that just as Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven shofars of rams’ horns before Yahweh went forward and blew the shofars and the ark of the covenant of Yahweh followed them.
The front troops went ahead of the priests who blew the shofars and the rear guard followed the ark, and the priests continued to blow the shofars as they walked.
Now Joshua commanded the people, saying, “You are not to shout, nor let your voice be heard, nor is any word to proceed out of your mouth until the day I tell you to shout. Then you are to shout.”
So he had the ark of Yahweh circle around the city, going around it one time. Then they came into the camp and lodged in the camp.

Then Joshua rose early in the morning and the priests took up the ark of Yahweh.
And the seven priests carrying the seven shofars of rams’ horns ahead of the ark of Yahweh walked on continually and blew the trumpets, and the forward troops went ahead of them. The rear guard came after the ark of Yahweh. The priests continued to blow the shofars as they walked.
And the second day they marched around the city one time and returned to the camp. They did this six days.

It came to pass on the seventh day that they rose early, as dawn came, and they marched around the city in the same way seven times. Only on that day they marched around the city seven times.
And it came to pass on the seventh time, the priests blew the shofars and Joshua said to the people, “Shout! For Yahweh has given you the city!
The city is to be devoted to Yahweh, it and all that is in it. Only Rahab the prostitute will live, she and all who are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.
But as for you, only keep yourselves away from the devoted things, lest as you are devoting it, you take of the devoted things, and you make the camp of Israel a devoted thing and bring disaster on it.
For all the silver and gold and articles of bronze and iron are holy to Yahweh. They are to go into Yahweh’s treasury.”

So the people shouted, and the priests blew the shofars. And it came to pass when the people heard the sound of the shofar that the people shouted with a great shout and the wall fell underneath itself so that the people went up into the city, every man straight in front of him, and they captured the city.
They devoted to Yahweh all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox and sheep and donkey with the mouth of the sword.

Rahab and Her Family Spared

But Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring out from there the woman and all that she has, as you swore to her.”
So the young men, the spies, went in and brought out Rahab and her father and her mother and her brothers and all that she had; they also brought out all her relatives, and they settled them outside of the camp of Israel.

And they burned the city with fire, and all that was in it. Only they put the silver and the gold and the articles of bronze and of iron into the treasury of the house of Yahweh.
But Rahab the prostitute, and her father’s household and all that she had, Joshua let live. She has lived in the midst of Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

Joshua laid an oath upon them at that time, saying, “Cursed before Yahweh is the man who rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho. With his firstborn son he will lay its foundation, and with his youngest son he will set up its gates.”

And Yahweh was with Joshua, and his fame was in all the land.
