Go to Commentary on Josh 2

Spies Sent to Jericho

Joshua the son of Nun secretly sent two men out from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab, and they lay down there.

And the king of Jericho was told, “Behold, men of the children of Israel came here tonight to search out the land.”
So the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered into your house, for they have come to search out all the land.”

But the woman had taken the two men and hid them. Then she said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they came from.
It came to pass when the city gate was about to be shut, when it was dark, that the men went out. Where the men went, I do not know. Pursue them quickly, for you will catch up with them.”
But she had brought them up to the roof, and had hidden them in the stalks of flax that she had spread out on the roof.
The men pursued them on the road to the Jordan to the fords, and as soon as those who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate.

The Promise to Rahab

As for the spies, before they had laid down, she came up to them on the roof,
and she said to the men, “I know that Yahweh has given you the land and that the fear of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.
For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and to Og whom you devoted to destruction.
As soon as we had heard it, our hearts melted, and there did not rise up any more spirit in any man because of you, for Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.
And now, please swear to me by Yahweh, since I have acted faithfully toward you, that you also will act faithfully toward my father’s house and give me a reliable sign,
and that you will keep alive my father and my mother and my brothers and my sisters and all that they have, and will deliver our lives from death.”

The men said to her, “Our life for yours, if you do not tell this business of ours, and when Yahweh gives us the land, we will deal faithfully and reliably with you.”

Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was in the outer part of the city wall, and she lived in the wall.
And she said to them, “Go to the hill country, lest the pursuers encounter you, and hide yourselves there three days until the pursuers have returned. Afterward, go on your way.”

And the men said to her, “We will be guiltless from this oath of yours that you have made us swear….
Behold, we are coming into the land. Tie this cord of scarlet thread in the window through which you let us down. You are to gather to yourself into the house, your father and your mother and your brothers and all your father’s household.
And it will come to pass that whoever goes out of the doors of your house, outside, his blood will be on his head, and we will be guiltless. But whoever is with you in the house, his blood will be on our head if any hand is on him.
But if you tell this business of ours, then we will be guiltless of your oath that you have made us to swear.”

And she said, “According to your words, so be it.” Then she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window.

So they went and came to the hill country and stayed there three days until the pursuers had returned. The pursuers sought them all along the road, but did not find them.
Then the two men returned, came down from the hill country, crossed over the Jordan and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they told him all that had happened to them.
They said to Joshua, “Truly Yahweh has given into our hands all the land. And also, all the inhabitants of the land melt away before us.”
