And after the death of Moses the servant of Yahweh, Yahweh spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying,
“Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, cross over this Jordan, you and all the people, to the land that I am giving to them—to the children of Israel.
Every place that the sole of your foot will tread on, I have given to you, just as I said to Moses.
From the wilderness and this Lebanon even to the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun will be your territory.
No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you and I will not forsake you.
“Be strong and courageous, for you will cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.
Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the Law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you will have success wherever you go.
This scroll of the Law must never cease being spoken out of your mouth, but you are to meditate on it day and night, so that you can be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.”
Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,
“Pass through the midst of the camp and command the people, saying, ‘Prepare provisions for yourselves, for in three more days you will cross over this Jordan, to go in to possessa the land that Yahweh your God gives you to possess it.’”
Joshua spoke to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, saying,
“Remember the word that Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you, saying, ‘Yahweh your God is giving you rest and will give you this land.
Your wives, your little ones and your livestock may live in the land that Moses gave you beyond the Jordan; but you must cross over before your brothers armed, all the valiant warriors, and must help them
until Yahweh has given your brothers rest as he has given you, and they have also possessed the land that Yahweh your God is giving them. Then you may return to the land of your possession, and possess it, the land that Moses the servant of Yahweh gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise.’”
And they answered Joshua, saying, “All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.
Just as we listened to Moses in all things, so will we listen to you. Only may Yahweh your God be with you, as he was with Moses.
Whoever rebels against your commandment and does not listen to your words in all that you command him, he will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous.”
