Wail, O Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste; cry out, you daughters of Rabbah, clothe yourself in sackcloth; lament and run back and forth within your walls; for Milcom will go into captivity together with his priests and his officials.
“Milcom will go into captivity.” It was a common custom for a conquering nation to take back home with them the gods of the defeated nation (cp. Isa. 46:1-2; Jer. 48:7; Hos. 10:5; Dan. 11:8; see commentary on Hos. 10:5).
