And in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying,
“Take a scroll for writing and write in it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah even to this day.
It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I am planning to do to them, so that each one turns back from his evil way; then I will forgive their iniquity and their sin.”
Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on a scroll for writing all the words of Yahweh that came from the mouth of Jeremiah that he had spoken to him.
And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, “I am restricted; I cannot go into the house of Yahweh;
so you must go, and read the words of Yahweh from the scroll that you have written from my mouth. Read them on a fast day in the hearing of the people in the house of Yahweh, and also you must read them in the hearing of all Judah who come out of their cities.
It may be their petition for mercy will come before Yahweh, and that everyone will turn from his evil way; for great is the anger and the wrath that Yahweh has pronounced against this people.”
Baruch the son of Neriah did everything that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading from the scroll the words of Yahweh in the house of Yahweh.
Now it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, that all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem, proclaimed a fast before Yahweh.
Then Baruch read from the scroll the words of Jeremiah in the house of Yahweh, in the room of Gemariah the son of Shaphan, the scribe, in the upper court, at the entrance of the New Gate of the house of Yahweh, in the hearing of all the people.
When Micaiah the son of Gemariah the son of Shaphan had heard all the words of Yahweh read from the scroll,
he went down into the king’s house, into the scribe’s room; and behold, all the officials were sitting there, Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the officials.
Then Micaiah told them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read the book in the hearing of the people.
So all the officials sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, “Take in your hand the scroll from which you have read in the hearing of the people, and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and came to them.
They said to him, “Sit down now, and read it in our ears.” So Baruch read it in their ears.
Now it came to pass when they had heard all the words that they turned in fear toward one another and said to Baruch, “We will report, yes, report all these words to the king.”
They asked Baruch, saying, “Tell us now, how did you write all these words from his mouth?”
Then Baruch answered them, “He spoke out all these words to me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink on the scroll.”
Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go hide, you and Jeremiah, and do not let anyone know where you are.”
Then they went in to the king into the court, but they had deposited the scroll in the room of Elishama the scribe; and they told all the words in the ears of the king.
So the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it out of the room of Elishama the scribe. Jehudi read it in the ears of the king and in the ears of all the officials who stood beside the king.
Now the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month, and there was a fire burning in the firepot in front of him.
And it came to pass, when Jehudi had read three or four columns, that Jehoiakim would cut it with a scribes knife and cast it into the fire that was in the firepot. He did this until the whole scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the firepot.
Yet neither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words was afraid, nor did they tear their clothes.
Even though Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.
Then the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, but Yahweh hid them.
Then the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah after the king had burned the scroll with the words that Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah. He said:
“Take again another scroll, and write in it all the original words that were in the original scroll that Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned.
And concerning Jehoiakim the king of Judah you are to say, ‘This is what Yahweh says: you have burned this scroll, saying, “Why have you written in it, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will cause man and animal to cease from there?’”
Therefore this is what Yahweh says concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: he will have no one to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body will be cast out in the day to the heat and in the night to the frost.
I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity, and I will bring on them, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem and on the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them, but they didn’t listen.’”
Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote on it from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and many similar words were added to them.
