And the same year, in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fifth month of the fourth year, Hananiah the son of Azzur, the prophet who was from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of Yahweh, in the presence of the priests and all the people, saying,
“This is what Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says. He says, ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon.
Within two full years I will bring again into this place all the articles of the house of Yahweh that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried to Babylon,
and I will bring again to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, with all the captives of Judah who went to Babylon, says Yahweh, for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.’”
Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and in the presence of all the people who stood in the house of Yahweh,
even the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen. May Yahweh do so! May Yahweh perform your words that you have prophesied, to bring again the articles of the house of Yahweh, and also all the exiles, from Babylon to this place.
Yet hear now this word that I speak in your ears, and in the ears of all the people:
the prophets who have preceded me and you from ancient times prophesied against many countries and against great kingdoms, and spoke of war, and of evil, and of plagues.
As for the prophet who prophesies of peace, when the word of the prophet comes to pass, then the prophet becomes known as one that Yahweh has truly sent.”
Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke bar off of the prophet Jeremiah’s neck and broke it.
Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, “This is what Yahweh says: ‘In this way, within two years I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon off of the neck of all the nations.’” And the prophet Jeremiah went his way.
Then, after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke bar off of the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, saying,
“Go and tell Hananiah, saying, ‘This is what Yahweh says: You have broken the yoke bars of wood, but you have made in their place yoke bars of iron.
For this is what Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: I have put a yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, so that they can serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they will serve him; and I have given him the animals of the field also.’”
Then the prophet Jeremiah said to Hananiah the prophet, “Hear now, Hananiah: Yahweh has not sent you, and you have made this people to trust in a lie.
Therefore this is what Yahweh says, ‘Behold, I am about to send you away off the face of the earth. This year you will die, because you have spoken rebellion against Yahweh.’”
So Hananiah the prophet died that same year in the seventh month.
