“sad.” The Hebrew word translated “sad” is zaaph (#02196 זָעַף), and it has a wide range of meanings, including to be sad, vexed, perplexed, in bad humor, angry, and enraged. Thus, English translations include: “sad, upset, distraught, troubled, disturbed, dejected, depressed, gloomy, morose. It is likely that the cupbearer and baker felt a mix of emotions including being sad and troubled, and likely somewhat depressed.
