Then he brought me back by the way of the outer gate of the sanctuary that faces the east; and it was shut.
Then Yahweh said to me, “This gate will be shut; it will not be opened, nor will anyone enter in by it, for Yahweh the God of Israel has entered in by it, so it will be shut.
The prince! As for the prince, he will sit in it to eat bread before Yahweh; he must enter by the way of the vestibule of the gate, and must go out by the way of the same.”
Then he brought me by the way of the north gate to the front of the house, and I looked, and behold, the glory of Yahweh filled the house of Yahweh, and I fell on my face.
Yahweh said to me, “Son of man, mark well, and see with your eyes, and hear with your ears all that I tell you concerning all the ordinances of the house of Yahweh, and all its laws; and mark well the entrance of the house, with every exit of the sanctuary.
You are to tell the rebellious, even tell to the house of Israel, This is what the Lord Yahweh says: ‘Enough of all your abominations, O house of Israel!
When you brought in foreigners, uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh, to be in my sanctuary, you profane it, even my house, when you offer my bread, the fat and the blood. You have broken my covenant, this in addition to all your abominations.
You have not kept charge of my holy things, but you have set others to keep charge of my sanctuary.
This is what the Lord Yahweh says: No foreigner, uncircumcised in heart and uncircumcised in flesh, of any of the foreigners who are among the children of Israel, may enter into my sanctuary.
And as for the Levites who went far from me when Israel went astray, who went astray from me after their idols, they will bear their iniquity.
Yet they will be ministers in my sanctuary, having oversight at the gates of the house, and ministering in the house; they will kill the burnt offering and the sacrifice for the people, and they will stand before them to minister to them.
But because they ministered to them before their idols and became a stumbling block of iniquity to the house of Israel, therefore have I lifted up my hand and sworn against them, says the Lord Yahweh, and they will bear the consequences of their iniquity.
They will not come near to me to serve as a priest to me, nor to come near to any of my holy things, to the things that are most holy; but they will bear their shame and the consequences of the abominations that they have committed.
Yet I will appoint them to keep charge of the house, of all its service and of all that will be done in it.
But the Levitical priests, the sons of Zadok, who performed the duty of my sanctuary when the children of Israel went astray from me, they will come near to me to minister to me; and they will stand before me to offer to me the fat and the blood, says the Lord Yahweh;
they may enter into my sanctuary, and they may come near to my table to minister to me, and they will keep my instruction.
When they enter the gates of the inner court, they must be clothed with linen garments; and wool must not be on them while they minister at the gates of the inner court, and inside.
They must have linen turbans on their heads, and must have linen undergarments around their waists; they are not to clothe themselves with anything that makes them sweat.
When they go out into the outer court, even into the outer court to the people, they must take off their garments in which they have been ministering, and place them in the holy rooms; and they must put on other garments, so that they do not transmit holiness to the people by means of their garments.
They are not to shave their heads, nor allow their hair to grow long; they are to only trim the hair of their heads.
Nor are any of the priests to drink wine when they enter into the inner court.
And they are not to take a wife who is a widow or is divorced, but they must take virgins of the seed of the house of Israel, or a widow who is the widow of a priest.
They must teach my people the difference between the holy and the common, and cause them to discern between the unclean and the clean.
And in a controversy they are to take their stand as judges, and they are to judge it according to my judgments. And they must keep my laws and my statutes in all my appointed feasts, and they must keep my Sabbaths holy.
They are not to defile themselves by going near a dead person. However, for a father, or for a mother, or for a son, or for a daughter, for a brother, or for a sister who has had no husband, they may defile themselves.
After he is cleansed, they are to count off seven days for him.
And on the day that he goes into the sanctuary, into the inner court, to minister in the sanctuary, he must offer his sin offering, says the Lord Yahweh.
And this will be their inheritance: I am their inheritance. And you are to give them no possession in Israel; I am their possession.
They will eat the grain offering, and the sin offering, and the trespass offering, and every devoted thing in Israel will be theirs.
The first of all the firstfruits of everything, and every offering of every kind, of all your offerings, will be for the priest. You are to also give to the priests the first of your dough, to cause a blessing to rest on your household.
The priests may not eat anything that dies by itself or is torn by other animals, whether it is bird or animal.”
