Then Moses said to God, “Behold, if I go to the children of Israel and tell them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ What should I tell them?”
“if I go.” The Hebrew is written in a way that expresses Moses’ reservation about going back to Egypt. In short, he is saying, “Suppose I do all this….” We word that as “If.”
