“Then we turned and took our journey into the wilderness by the road to the Red Sea, as Yahweh spoke to me; and we circled around the hill country of Seir many days.
Yahweh spoke to me, saying,
‘You have gone around this hill country long enough. Turn northward.
Command the people, saying, “You are to pass through the territory of your brothers the children of Esau who live in Seir, and they will be afraid of you, but be very careful,
do not provoke them to war, for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread on, because I have given the hill country of Seir to Esau for a possession.
You may purchase food from them with your money so that you can eat; and you may also buy water from them for money so that you may drink.
For Yahweh your God has blessed you in all the work of your hand; he has known your walking through this great wilderness. These 40 years Yahweh your God has been with you, and you have lacked nothing.”’
“So we passed beyond our brothers the children of Esau who live in Seir, away from the Arabah Road that comes from Elath and from Ezion-geber. We turned and passed through by the Road of the Wilderness of Moab.
Yahweh said to me, ‘Do not harass Moab, nor provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of his land for a possession because I have given Ar to the children of Lot for a possession.’”
(The Emim lived in it before, a people as great and numerous and as tall as the Anakim.
Like the Anakim, they also are regarded as Rephaim, but the Moabites call them Emim.
The Horites also lived in Seir before, but the children of Esau drove them out, and they destroyed them from before them and lived in their place, just as Israel did in the land of their possession that Yahweh gave to them).
“‘Now rise up and cross over the brook Zered.’ So we went over the brook Zered.
The days in which we came from Kadesh-barnea until we had crossed over the brook Zered were 38 years, until all the generation of the men of war had perished from the midst of the camp as Yahweh swore to them.
Indeed, the hand of Yahweh had been against them to destroy them from the midst of the camp until they had all perished.
“So when all the men of war had been consumed and were dead from among the people,
Yahweh spoke to me, saying,
‘Today you are to pass over Ar, the border of Moab,
and when you approach the territory of the children of Ammon, do not bother them nor fight with them; for I will not give you any of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession because I have given it to the children of Lot for a possession.’”
That also is accounted a land of Rephaim. Rephaim lived in it before, but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim,
a people great and many and tall, as the Anakim; but Yahweh destroyed them before them, and they succeeded them and lived in their place;
as he did for the children of Esau who dwell in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them and they drove them out and lived in their place even to this day;
and the Avvim who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim who came from Caphtor destroyed them and lived in their place.
“‘Rise up, move out and cross over the the Arnon Valley; behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and stir yourself up against him in battle.
This very day I will begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you on the faces of the peoples who are under the whole heavens who will hear the report of you, and they will tremble and be in anguish because of you.’
“I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,
‘Let me cross through your land. I will go along by the highway, I will not turn to the right hand or to the left.
You can sell me food in exchange for silver, so that I can eat, and give me water for silver, so that I can drink; just let me cross through on my feet,
just as the children of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I have crossed over the Jordan into the land that Yahweh our God is giving us.’
But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us cross through his territory, for Yahweh your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, in order to give him into your hand as it is this very day.
“And Yahweh said to me, ‘Behold, I have begun to give over Sihon and his land before you; begin to possess it so that you inherit his land.’
Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Jahaz,
but Yahweh our God gave him over before us, and we struck him and his sons and all his people.
We captured all his cities at that time and devoted to destruction every inhabited city, including the women and the little ones; we left none remaining,
only the livestock we took for a prey to ourselves with the spoil of the cities that we had taken.
From Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon and the city that is in the valley, even to Gilead, there was not a city too high for us; Yahweh our God gave over all of them before us.
Only to the land of the children of Ammon you did not come near; all the side of the river Jabbok and the cities of the hill country and wherever Yahweh our God forbade us.”
