“If there is found in the midst of you, inside any of your gates that Yahweh your God gives you, a man or woman who does what is evil in the eyes of Yahweh your God by transgressing his covenant,
and has gone and served other gods and bowed down to them,a or the sun or the moon or any of the army of heaven that I have commanded not to worship,
and it is told to you, and you have heard of it, then you must inquire diligently; and behold, if it is true and the thing certain, that this abomination was done in Israel,
then you must bring out that man or that woman who has done this evil thing to your gates, even the man or the woman, and you must stone them with stones so that they die.
At the mouth of two witnesses or three witnesses is he who is to die to be put to death; at the mouth of one witness he is not to be put to death.
The hand of the witnesses are to be first on him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. So you must purge the evil from the midst of you.
“If there arises a matter too hard for you in judgment, between blood and blood, between plea and plea and between stroke and stroke, being matters of controversy inside your gates, then you must arise and go up to the place that Yahweh your God will choose;
and you are to come to the Levitical priests and to the judge that is there in those days, and you are to inquire and they will show you the sentence of judgment.
You must do according to the word that they will tell you from that place that Yahweh will choose, and you must be careful to do according to all that they teach you;
according to the instruction that they instruct you and according to the judgment that they tell you, you must do; do not turn aside from the word that they tell you to the right hand nor to the left.
But the man who shows contempt for the priest who stands there before Yahweh your God to serve Him, or shows contempt for the judge, by not obeying them, that man must die; and you must put away the evil from Israel.
All the people will hear and fear and no longer show contempt.
“When you have come to the land that Yahweh your God gives you and possess it and dwell in it, and say, ‘I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me,’
then you must set, yes, set a king over you that Yahweh your God will choose: one from among your brothers you are to set king over you; you are not to put a foreigner over you, who is not your brother.
Only he must not acquire many horses for himself, nor make the people to return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, because Yahweh has said to you, ‘You are not to go back that way again.’
And he must not acquire many wives for himself, so that his heart does not turn away, and he must not greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.
When he sits on the throne of his kingdom he is to write for himself a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the Levitical priests,
and it is to be with him and he is to read from it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear Yahweh his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes to do them,
that his heart not be lifted up above his brothers and that he not turn aside from the commandment, to the right hand or to the left; to the end that he prolongs his days in his kingdom, he and his sons, in the midst of Israel.”
