In the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after the one that had appeared to me previously.
And I saw in the vision, and it came to pass while I was looking that I was in the palace-fortress of Susa, which is in the province of Elam; and I saw in the vision, and I was by the Ulai Canal.
And I lifted up my eyes and looked, and behold, a ram that had two horns was standing before the river, and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher one came up last.
I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; and no beasts could stand before him, nor was there any who could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his own will, and magnified himself.
As I was considering this, behold, a male goat came from the west over the surface of the whole earth, and it did not touch the ground; and the goat had a conspicuous horn between his eyes.
He came to the ram that had the two horns that I saw standing before the river, and ran at him in his powerful wrath.
I saw him come close to the ram, and he was moved with anger against him, and struck the ram and broke his two horns. And there was no power in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him down to the ground and trampled on him; and there was no one who could rescue the ram out of his hand.
Then the male goat magnified himself exceedingly. But when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and instead of it, four conspicuous horns came up extending toward the four winds of heaven.
Out of one of them came a little horn, which grew exceeding great toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the glorious land.
It grew great, even reaching to the army of heaven; and some of the army and of the stars it cast down to the ground and trampled on them.
Yes, it magnified itself, even to be equal with the Commander of the army, and from him the continual burnt offering was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was brought low.
And because of transgression, the army was given over to it together with the continual burnt offering; and it cast down truth to the ground, and it did its pleasure and prospered.
Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to that certain one who spoke, “How long will the vision last, this vision concerning the continual burnt offering, and the transgression that makes desolate, and the giving over of both the sanctuary and army to be trampled underfoot?”
And it came to pass when I, Daniel, had seen the vision, that I sought to understand it; and behold, there stood before me one having the appearance of a mighty man.
I heard a man’s voice between the banks of the Ulai and it called out and said, “Gabriel, make this man understand the vision.”
So he came near where I stood. And when he came, I was frightened, and fell on my face. But he said to me, “Understand, O son of man, that the vision belongs to the time of the end.”
Now as he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep with my face toward the ground; but he touched me and made me stand up.
He said, “Behold, I will make known to you what will be in the latter time of the wrath; because it belongs to the appointed time of the end.
The ram that you saw that had the two horns, they are the kings of Media and Persia.
The shaggy male goat is the king of Greece, and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king.
As for that which was broken, in place of which four horns arose, four kingdoms will arise out of the nation, but not with his power.
that has been told is true,
but seal up the vision,
for it pertains to many days from now.”
