When David had crossed a little beyond the summit, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him with a team of loaded-up donkeys, and on them were 200 loaves of bread and 100 clusters of raisins and 100 summer fruits, and a skin-bottle of wine.
The king said to Ziba, “What do you mean by these?” Ziba said, “The donkeys are for the king’s household to ride on and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat, and the wine is for those who are weary in the wilderness to drink.”
When king David came to Bahurim, behold, a man of the clan of the house of Saul whose name was Shimei the son of Gera came out. He came out, continually cursing as he came out.
And he threw stones at David and at all the servants of king David and all the people and all the mighty men who were on his right hand and on his left.
And Shimei said as he cursed, “Get out, get out you man of blood, you man of Belial!
Yahweh has returned on you all the blood of the house of Saul in whose place you have reigned! Yahweh has given the kingship into the hand of Absalom your son! Behold, you are in your evil situation because you are a man of blood!”
The king said, “What do I have in common with you, you sons of Zeruiah? If he is cursing because Yahweh has said to him, ‘Curse David,’ then who can say, ‘Why are you doing this?’”
Then David said to Abishai and to all his servants, “Look, my son, who came out of my body, seeks my life. How much more then this Benjamite? Leave him alone and let him curse, for Yahweh has told him to.
It may be that Yahweh will look on my affliction and that Yahweh will repay me good in place of his cursing today.”
So David and his men went on the road, and Shimei went along on the ridge of the hill close to him and cursed as he went, throwing stones close to him and casting dust.
The king and all the people who were with him arrived weary. And he refreshed himself there.
Now Absalom and all the people, the men of Israel, came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel was with him.
And when Hushai the Archite, David’s friend, had come to Absalom, that Hushai said to Absalom, “May the king live! May the king live!”
Then Hushai said to Absalom, “No, but whomever Yahweh and this people and all the men of Israel have chosen, I will be for him and I will stay with him.
And additionally, whom should I serve, if not in the presence of his son? As I have served in your father’s presence, so I will in your presence.”
Then Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Go in to your father’s concubines that he has left to take care of the house. Then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself a stench to your father. Then the hands of all who are with you will be strengthened.”
So they spread a tent for Absalom on the roof of the palace, and Absalom went in to his father’s concubines before the eyes of all Israel.
