1Then Solomon said, “Yahweh has said that he would dwell in the thick cloud.
2I have built you a magnificent house, a place for you to dwell in forever.”
3The king turned his face around and blessed all the assembly of Israel, and all the assembly of Israel stood.
4And he said, “Blessed is Yahweh, the God of Israel, who with his hand has fulfilled what he spoke with his mouth to my father David saying,
5‘Since the day that I brought my people out of the land of Egypt, I have not chosen any city out of all the tribes of Israel to build a house for my name to be there, and I did not choose any man to be ruler over my people Israel;
6but now I have chosen Jerusalem for my name to be there, and I chose David to be over my people Israel.’
7“Now it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel.
8But Yahweh said to David my father, ‘Because it was in your heart to build a house for my name, you did well that it was in your heart.
9Nevertheless, you are not to build the house, but your son who will come from your body, he will build the house for my name.’
10Yahweh has established his word that he spoke, for I have risen up in the place of David my father and I sit on the throne of Israel as Yahweh promised, and have built the house for the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel.
11I have placed the ark there, in which is the covenant of Yahweh, which he cut with the children of Israel.”
12Then he stood before the altar of Yahweh in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and spread out his hands
13(for Solomon had made a bronze platform, five cubits long, and five cubits wide, and three cubits high, and had set it in the middle of the court, and he stood on it and kneeled down on his knees before all the assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven)
14and he said, “O Yahweh, the God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven or on earth, who keeps the covenant and covenant faithfulness with your servants who walk before you with all their heart.
15You have kept what you spoke to your servant David my father. You spoke with your mouth and have fulfilled it with your hand, as it is this day.
16So now may Yahweh the God of Israel keep for your servant David my father what you have spoken to him, saying, ‘You will not fail to have a man sit in my presence on the throne of Israel, if only your sons guard their way, to walk in my Law as you have walked before me.’
17So now, Yahweh, O God of Israel, let your word be confirmed, which you spoke to your servant David.
18“But will God actually dwell with humankind on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built!
19Yet have respect for the prayer of your servant and for his supplication, O Yahweh my God, to listen to the cry and to the prayer that your servant is praying before you,
20that your eyes may be open toward this house night and day— toward the place of which you said, that you would put your name— to listen to the prayer that your servant will pray toward this place.
21Listen to the petitions of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray toward this place. Yes, hear from your dwelling place, from heaven, and when you hear, forgive.
22“If a person sins against his neighbor and he lifts up an oath-curse upon him, to put him under the oath-curse, and he comes with the oath-curse before your altar in this house,
23then hear in heaven, and act, and judge your servants, bringing retribution to the wicked person by bringing his way on his own head, and declaring the righteous person to be righteous by giving to him according to his righteousness.
24“If your people Israel are struck down before the enemy because they have sinned against you, and return to you and praise your name and pray and make supplication before you in this house,
25then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them again to the land that you gave to them and to their fathers.
26“When heaven is shut up and there is no rain, because they have sinned against you, if they pray toward this place and praise your name, and turn from their sin because you afflict them,
27then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of your servants and of your people Israel— since you teach them the good way in which they should walk— and send rain on your land that you have given to your people as an inheritance.
28“If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence, if there is blight or mildew, locust or caterpillar; if their enemies besiege them in the land of their cities, whatever affliction or whatever sickness there is,
29whatever prayer and supplication is made by any person, or by all your people Israel, everyone who knows his own affliction and his own sorrow and spreads out his hands toward this house,
30then you hear from heaven your dwelling place and forgive, and give to every person, whose heart you know, according to all his ways (because you, you only, know the hearts of the children of men),
31that they may fear you and walk in your ways all the days that they live in the land that you gave to our fathers.
32“Also, concerning the foreigner who is not of your people Israel, when he comes out of a far away country because of your great name and your mighty hand and your outstretched arm, when they come and pray toward this house,
33then you hear from heaven, from your dwelling place, and do according to all that the foreigner asks you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you like your people Israel, and so that they know that this house that I have built is called by your name.
34“If your people go out to battle against their enemies, by whatever way you send them, and they pray to you toward this city that you have chosen and the house that I have built for your name,
35then from heaven, hear their prayer and their supplication and do what is right for them.
36“If they sin against you (for there is no person who does not sin) and you are angry with them and give them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captive to a land far away or near,
37yet if they will turn their heart in the land where they are carried captive, and repent and plead to you for mercy in the land of their captivity, saying, ‘We have sinned and have committed iniquity; we have acted wickedly,’
38if they return to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their captivity—the land to which they have carried them captive— and they pray toward their land that you gave to their fathers, and the city that you have chosen, and toward the house that I have built for your name,
39then hear from heaven, from your dwelling place, their prayer and their petitions, and do what is right for them, and forgive your people who have sinned against you.
40“Now, my God, let your eyes be open and let your ears be attentive to the prayer that is made in this place.
41“Now therefore, arise, Yahweh God, into your resting place, you and the ark of your strength. Let your priests, Yahweh God, be clothed with salvation, and let your faithful people rejoice in good things.
42Yahweh God, do not reject the face of your anointed. Remember the covenant faithfulness of David your servant.”
