The Prayer of Hannah

And Hannah prayed and said: “My heart delights in Yahweh! My horn is lifted high in Yahweh! My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies because I rejoice in your salvation.
There is no one holy as Yahweh! There is no one other than you! There is no rock like our God.
Speak no more so high, so high and mighty, having arrogance come out of your mouth. For Yahweh is a God of knowledge; by him actions are weighed.
The bows of the mighty are shattered, but those who stumbled are armed with strength.
Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry have ceased being hungry. Yes, the barren has given birth to seven sons, but she who has many sons withers.
Yahweh brings death and makes alive. He brings down to Sheol and brings up.
Yahweh makes poor and makes rich. He brings low, he also lifts up.
He raises up the poor out of the dust. He lifts up the needy from the refuse heap to make them sit with nobles, and he makes them inherit a throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are Yahweh’s and he has set the world on them.
He will guard the feet of his faithful ones but the wicked will become silent in darkness, for no man will prevail by strength.
As for Yahweh, those who contend with him will be shattered. He will thunder against them in heaven. Yahweh will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed one.”

And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house, and the child served Yahweh in the presence of Eli the priest.

Eli’s Wicked Sons

Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they did not know Yahweh.
Now the rule of the priests with the people was that when anyone sacrificed a sacrifice, while the flesh was boiling, the priest’s servant came with a fork of three teeth in his hand,
and he would thrust it into the basin, or kettle, or caldron, or pot. All that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is what they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there.
Also, before they burned the fat into smoke, the priest’s servant came and said to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat to roast for the priest, for he will not accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
And if the man said to him, “Let the fat first be burned, yes burned into smoke, and then take as much as your soul craves,” then he would say, “No, but you must give it to me now, and if not I will take it by force.”
Thus the sin of the young men was very great before Yahweh, for the men treated the offering of Yahweh with contempt.

But Samuel served in the presence of Yahweh, being a child, clothed with a linen ephod.
Moreover, his mother used to make him a little cloak and bring it to him from year to year when she went up with her husband to sacrifice the yearly sacrifice.
Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife and say, “May Yahweh give you seed from this woman to replace the loaned-one who was lent to Yahweh.” And they would go back to his place.

And Yahweh visited Hannah and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before Yahweh.

Now Eli was very old and he heard all that his sons were doing to all Israel and how they were lying with the women who served at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.
And he said to them, “Why are you doing such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all these people.
No, my sons! For the report that I hear Yahweh’s people spreading is not good.
If one man sin against another, God can judge him, but if a man sin against Yahweh, who can intercede for him?” But they did not listen to the voice of their father, therefore Yahweh desired to put them to death.
Now the child Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor both with Yahweh and also with the people.

Prophecy Against the House of Eli

And a man of God came to Eli and said to him, “This is what Yahweh says: ‘Did I not reveal, yes, reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in slavery to Pharaoh’s house,
and choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense and to wear an ephod before me? And I gave to the house of your father all of the offerings that are made by fire by the children of Israel?
So why do you all kick at my sacrifices and at my offerings that I have commanded for my Dwelling, and you honor your sons above me making yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel my people?’

“Therefore Yahweh the God of Israel says, ‘I had said, yes, said, that your house and the house of your father would walk before me forever.’ But now Yahweh says, ‘Be it far from me, for those who honor me I will honor and those who treat me with contempt will be lightly esteemed.

“‘Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father’s house, such that there will not be an old man in your house.
You will see trouble in my habitation in spite of all the good that will be done to Israel, and there will not be an old man in your house all the days to come.
The man of yours whom I do not cut off from my altar will be spared to weep out his eyes and grieve his soul, but all the greater part of your house will die.
And this will be the sign to you that will come on your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they will both die.

“‘And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest who will do according to whatever is in my heart and in my soul. I will build him a sure house, and he will walk in the presence of my anointed one all the days to come.
And it will come to pass that whoever is left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and will say, ‘Please put me into one of the priests’ offices so that I may eat a piece of bread.’”
