Naboth’s Vineyard

And after these things, Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard that was in Jezreel, next to the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.
So Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, “Give me your vineyard so that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is nearby, next to my house, and for it I will give you a better vineyard than it is. Or, if it seems good in your eyes, I will give you its value in silver.”

But Naboth said to Ahab, “Yahweh forbid me from giving the inheritance of my fathers to you!”

So Ahab came into his house sullen and angry because of the word that Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him, for he had said, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” He laid down on his bed and turned away his face and would not eat any food.

But Jezebel his wife came to him and said to him, “Why is your spirit so sullen, that you do not eat any food?”

And he said to her, “Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite and said to him, ‘Give me your vineyard for silver; or else, if you like, I will give you another vineyard for it.’ But he answered, ‘I will not give you my vineyard.’”

Then Jezebel his wife said to him, “Now you will exercise your kingship over Israel! Arise and eat food and let your heart be merry. I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.”
So she wrote letters in Ahab’s name and sealed them with his seal and sent the letters to the elders and to the nobles who were in his city who lived with Naboth in his city.
She wrote in the letters, saying, “Proclaim a fast and set Naboth at the head of the people.
Then seat two men, sons of Belial, before him, and have them testify against him, saying, ‘You cursed God and the king!’ Then bring him out and stone him so that he dies.”

The men of his city, the elders and the nobles who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had sent to them to do, as it was written in the letters that she had sent to them.
They proclaimed a fast and set Naboth at the head of the people.
Then the two men, the sons of Belial, came in and sat before him. The sons of Belial testified against him, against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, “Naboth cursed God and the king!” Then they brought him out of the city and stoned him with stones and he died.
Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned and is dead.”

And when Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jezebel said to Ahab, “Arise! Take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite that he refused to give you for silver, for Naboth is not alive, but dead.”

And when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.

Yahweh’s Judgment on Ahab

But the word of Yahweh came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,
“Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel who lives in Samaria. Behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone down to take possession of it.
You are to speak to him, saying, ‘This is what Yahweh says: “Have you murdered and also taken possession?”’ You are to speak to him, saying, ‘This is what Yahweh says: “In the place where the dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs will lick your blood, even yours.”’”

Ahab said to Elijah, “Have you found me, my enemy?” He answered, “I have found you because you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the eyes of Yahweh.
Behold, I will bring evil on you and will utterly burn up those coming after you, and I will cut off from Ahab him who pisses against a wall and him who is slave or free in Israel.
And I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah because of the provocation with which you have provoked me to anger and have made Israel sin.”
Yahweh also spoke about Jezebel, saying, “The dogs will eat Jezebel by the rampart of Jezreel.

He who dies of Ahab in the city the dogs will eat and he who dies in the field the birds of the heavens will eat.”

Ahab's Repentance

Surely there was none who sold himself to do what was evil in the eyes of Yahweh like Ahab did, urged on by his wife Jezebel.
He did exceedingly abominably in following idols just as all that the Amorites did, whom Yahweh dispossessed from the presence of the children of Israel.

And when Ahab heard those words he tore his clothes and put sackcloth on his flesh, and fasted and lay down in sackcloth and went around softly.
The word of Yahweh came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,
“Have you seen that Ahab is humbling himself before me? Because he is humbling himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days; but in his son’s days I will bring the evil on his house.”
