The cows went straight on the road, on the road to Beth-shemesh. They stayed on one path, lowing as they went, and did not turn to the right or to the left, and the lords of the Philistines went after them to the border of Beth-shemesh.
“lowing as they went.” This is perhaps God’s way of announcing His coming, using the cows as his trumpeters. It was common that a king would have people go ahead of him with trumpets and fanfare announcing his coming.
