Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they did not know Yahweh.
Now the custom of the priests with the people was that when anyone sacrificed a sacrifice, while the flesh was boiling, the priest’s servant came with a fork of three teeth in his hand,
and he would thrust it into the basin, or kettle, or caldron, or pot. All that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is what they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there.
Also, before they turned the fat into smoke-perfume, the priest’s servant came and said to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat to roast for the priest, for he will not accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
And if the man said to him, “Let the fat first be turned into smoke-perfume, yes, smoke-perfume, and then take as much as your soul craves,” then he would say, “No, but you must give it to me now, and if not I will take it by force.”
Thus the sin of the young men was very great before Yahweh, for the men treated the offering of Yahweh with contempt.
But Samuel served in the presence of Yahweh, being a child, clothed with a linen ephod.
Moreover, his mother used to make him a little cloak and bring it to him from year to year when she went up with her husband to sacrifice the yearly sacrifice.
Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife and say, “May Yahweh give you seed from this woman to replace the loaned-one who was lent to Yahweh.” And they would go back to his place.
Now Eli was very old and he heard all that his sons were doing to all Israel and how they were lying with the women who served at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting.
And he said to them, “Why are you doing such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all these people.
No, my sons! For the report that I hear Yahweh’s people spreading is not good.
If one man sin against another, God can judge him, but if a man sin against Yahweh, who can intercede for him?” But they did not listen to the voice of their father, therefore Yahweh desired to put them to death.
The child Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor both with Yahweh and also with the people.
And a man of God came to Eli and said to him, “This is what Yahweh says: ‘Did I not reveal, yes, reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in slavery to Pharaoh’s house,
and choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to turn incense into smoke-perfume, to wear an ephod before me? And I gave to the house of your father all of the offerings that are made by fire by the children of Israel?
So why do you all kick at my sacrifice and at my offering that I have commanded in my habitation, and you honor your sons above me making yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel my people?’
“‘Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father’s house, such that there will not be an old man in your house.
You will see trouble in my habitation in spite of all the good that will be done to Israel, and there will not be an old man in your house all the days to come.
The man of yours whom I do not cut off from my altar will be spared to weep out his eyes and grieve his soul, and all the greater part of your house will die.
And this will be the sign to you that will come on your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they will both die.
“‘And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest who will do according to whatever is in my heart and in my soul. I will build him a sure house, and he will walk in the presence of my anointed one all the days to come.
And it will come to pass that whoever is left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread, and will say, ‘Please put me into one of the priests’ offices so that I may eat a piece of bread.’”
