Now it came about in those days that the Philistines gathered their armies together into an armed force to fight with Israel. And Achish said to David, “Know, yes, know that you will go out with me in the army, you and your men.”
Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him and buried him in Ramah, in his own city, and Saul had removed from the land those who inquired of spirits or had familiar spirits.
The Philistines gathered themselves together, and came and encamped at Shunem, and Saul gathered all Israel together and they encamped at Mount Gilboa.
When Saul saw the army of the Philistines, he was afraid and his heart trembled greatly.
And when Saul asked of Yahweh, Yahweh did not answer him; not by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.
Then Saul said to his servants, “Seek out for me a woman who possesses a familiar spirit, that I may go to her and inquire of her.” His servants said to him, “Behold, there is a woman who has a familiar spirit at En-dor.”
So Saul disguised himself and put on different clothing and went, he and two men with him, and they came to the woman at night. And he said, “Please divine for me by the familiar spirit and bring up for me the one that I say to you.”
And the woman said to him, “Behold, you know what Saul has done, how he has removed from the land those who inquire of spirits or have familiar spirits. So why do you lay a snare for my life to cause me to die?”
Then he said to her, “What is his appearance?” And she said, “An old man is coming up. He is covered with a cloak.” And Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground and prostrated himself.
And Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Saul answered, “I am exceedingly distressed, for the Philistines are making war against me, and God has turned away from me and no longer answers me; not by prophets nor by dreams. So I have called you to make known to me what I should do.”
Then Samuel said, “So why do you ask of me, since Yahweh has turned away from you and has become your foe?
Yahweh has done to you as he spoke by my hand. Yahweh has torn the kingdom out of your hand and has given it to your neighbor, even to David.
Because you did not obey the voice of Yahweh and did not carry out his fierce wrath against Amalek, therefore Yahweh has done this thing to you this day.
And Yahweh will give Israel as well as you into the hand of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. Yahweh will also give the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.”
Then immediately Saul fell full stature on the ground and was exceedingly afraid because of the words of Samuel, and there was no strength in him because he had eaten no food all that day nor all that night.
And the woman came to Saul and saw that he was exceedingly terrified and said to him, “Behold, your servant has listened to your voice, and I have put my life in my hand and have listened to your words that you spoke to me.
So now please listen also to the voice of your servant and let me set a piece of bread before you, and eat, so that you will have strength when you go on your way.”
Now the woman had a fattened calf in the house. So she hurried and slaughtered it, and she took flour and kneaded it and baked unleavened bread from it.
She brought it before Saul and before his servants, and they ate. Then they rose up and went away that night.
