And when Solomon had finished the building of the house of Yahweh and the king’s house and all Solomon’s desire that he was pleased to do,
that Yahweh appeared to Solomon a second time like he had appeared to him at Gibeon.
And Yahweh said to him, “I have heard your prayer and your supplication that you have made before me. I have made this house holy that you have built to put my name there forever; and my eyes and my heart will be there perpetually.
“As for you, if you will walk before me as David your father walked, in integrity of heart and in uprightness, doing according to all that I have commanded you, keeping my statutes and my ordinances,
then I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever, just as I promised to David your father, saying, ‘You will never fail to have a descendant on the throne of Israel.’
“But if you turn, yes, turn away from following me, you or your children, and not keep my commandments and my statutes that I have set before you, but go and serve other gods and worship them,
then I will cut off Israel from the face of the land that I have given them, and this house that I have made holy for my name I will cast out of my sight, and Israel will be a proverb and a taunt among all peoples.
And this house, which is now so exalted, everyone passing by it will be astonished and will whistle, and they will say, ‘Why has Yahweh done this to this land and to this house?’
And they will answer, ‘Because they forsook Yahweh their God who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and they embraced other gods and worshiped them and served them. That is why Yahweh has brought all this evil on them.’”
Now it was at the end of 20 years, during which time Solomon had built the two houses, the house of Yahweh and the king’s house
(now Hiram the king of Tyre had supplied Solomon with cedar trees and fir trees and with gold; as much as he desired), that then king Solomon gave Hiram 20 towns in the land of Galilee.
And Hiram came out from Tyre to see the towns that Solomon had given him, but they did not please him.
So he said, “What towns are these that you have given me, my brother?” So he called them the land of Cabul to this day.
Now Hiram had sent to the king 120 talents of gold.
Now this is the account of the forced labor that King Solomon conscripted to build the house of Yahweh and his own house, and the Millo, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor and Megiddo and Gezer.
Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up and captured Gezer and burned it with fire, and killed the Canaanites who lived in the city and gave it for a dowry to his daughter, Solomon’s wife.
Solomon built up Gezer and Lower Beth-horon
and Baalath and Tamar in the wilderness, in the land,
and all the storage cities that Solomon had, and the cities for his chariots and the cities for his horsemen and for whatever Solomon desired to build for his pleasure in Jerusalem, and in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.
As for all the people who remained of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, who were not of the children of Israel,
their children who were left after them in the land whom the children of Israel were not able to devote to destruction, from them Solomon conscripted forced laborers to this day.
But Solomon did not make any slaves of the children of Israel, but they were the men of war, and his servants, and his officials, and his captains, and commanders of his chariots and of his horsemen.
These were the commanders of the officers who were over Solomon’s work, 550 men who ruled over the people who were doing the work.
Solomon offered burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar that he built to Yahweh three times a year, and burned incense into smoke along with them on the altar that was before Yahweh. So Solomon gave completeness to the house.
And King Solomon made a fleet of ships in Ezion-geber that is beside Eloth, on the shore of the Red Sea in the land of Edom.
Hiram sent some of his servants in the fleet, sailors who had knowledge of the sea, along with the servants of Solomon.
They came to Ophir and took gold from there, 420 talents, and brought it to King Solomon.
