Elijah Announces a Drought

Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As Yahweh the God of Israel lives before whom I stand, there will not be dew or rain these years except by my word.”

And the word of Yahweh came to him, saying,
“Go from here, turn eastward and hide yourself in the Wadi Cherith that is east of the Jordan,
and you will drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to sustain you there.”

So he went and did according to the word of Yahweh, for he went and lived in the Wadi Cherith that is east of the Jordan.
The ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning and bread and flesh in the evening, and he drank from the brook.
It came to pass after a while that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.

Elijah and the Widow

Then the word of Yahweh came to him, saying,
“Arise, go to Zarephath that belongs to Sidon, and stay there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain you.”
So he arose and went to Zarephath, and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks, and he called to her, and said, “Please get me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.”
As she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand.”

She said, “As Yahweh your God lives, I do not have any loaf baked, but only a handful of flour in the jar and a little oil in the jug. Behold, I am gathering two sticks so that I can go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it and die.”

Then Elijah said to her, “Do not be afraid. Go and do as you have said, but make me a little loaf from it first, and bring it out to me, and afterward make some for you and for your son.
For this is what Yahweh the God of Israel says: ‘The jar of flour will not be finished, nor will the jug of oil be lacking, until the day that Yahweh sends rain on the face of the land.’”

She went and did according to the word of Elijah, and she ate, she and he and her house, for many days.
The jar of flour was not finished, nor did the jug of oil lack, according to the word of Yahweh that he spoke by the hand of Elijah.

Elijah Raises the Widow's Son

It came to pass after these things that the son of the woman, the owner of the house, became sick; and his sickness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.
And she said to Elijah, “What have I to do with you, O man of God? Have you come to me to bring my sin to mind and to kill my son!”

Then he said to her, “Give me your son.” And he took him from her bosom and carried him up into the upper room where he was staying and laid him on his bed.
And he cried out to Yahweh and said, “O Yahweh my God, have you also brought evil on the widow with whom I am staying by killing her son?”
Then he stretched himself out upon the child three times and cried out to Yahweh and said, “O Yahweh my God, please let this child’s life return within him.”

And Yahweh listened to the voice of Elijah, and the life of the child returned within him, and he lived!
And Elijah took the child and brought him down out of the upper room into the house and gave him to his mother. And Elijah said, “Look! Your son is alive!”

Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now indeed I know that you are a man of God and that the word of Yahweh in your mouth is truth.”
